Chapter 4 - RELUCTANT RESPECT

The sitting room remained dead silent save for the soft hum of the air filtration system. Desmond watched Emma as she unhurriedly adjusted his leg positioning, placing a soft leather footrest beneath his heel to relieve the pressure on his compromised skin. She didn't offer fake words of encouragement or look away from his scars. She treated his body with the straightforward, honest care of an expert mechanic working on a high-performance machine that had been neglected by its owners.

Desmond leaned his broad back against the contoured leather headrest of his motorized wheelchair. For six months, he had been surrounded by terrified assistants, sycophantic lieutenants, and overly gentle specialists who treated him like fragile porcelain.

Emma stood up straight, brushing a strand of brown hair out of her face, completely unbothered by the fact that she had just barked at one of the most dangerous men in the city.

Desmond studied her in complete silence for five long seconds. His anger slowly dissolved, replaced by a quiet, reluctant respect that flickered in his icy blue eyes.

"You have terrible manners," Desmond said, his voice flat, though the faint trace of a sarcastic smirk pulled at the corner of his mouth.

"I get results," Emma replied, picking up her clipboard from the table. "Do you want the job done right, or do you want someone to hold your hand while your legs rot?"

Desmond let out a low, rough exhale that sounded almost like a laugh.

"You’re hired," Desmond said smoothly. "Frankie, clear the glass. And get her a cup of coffee that isn't spilled on her clothes."

Transition: Two weeks later. 3:00 a.m.

The dark, quiet sanctuary of Desmond’s master bedroom was illuminated only by the faint blue glow of a digital bedside clock and the soft silver moonlight streaming through the terrace doors. The room was cold, spacious, and filled with heavy oak furniture and medical monitoring equipment kept discreetly in the corner.

Desmond lay in the center of his king-sized bed, shirtless beneath a thin white sheet, wearing only gray fleece sleep pants. Without his shirt, his broad, athletic upper body, massive chest, and heavily tattooed arms were on full display—a testament to the relentless upper-body training he maintained despite his paralysis.

Suddenly, a violent, involuntary muscle spasm slammed through his lower body.

His torso tensed into a rigid arch. His jaw clenched tightly as his right leg violently jerked and stiffened beneath the sheets, the damaged spinal nerves firing chaotic, agonizing signals down his thighs. A quiet, pained gasp escaped his lips as he gripped the edge of the heavy mattress, his knuckles turning white as he fought against his own uncontrollable body.
