Chapter 7 - The Masterclass of Pressure

Derek was drowning on dry land.

Every single martial artist who had ever trained in the combatives bay knew the concept of "heavy hips," but what Derek was experiencing was something entirely alien. It felt as though an iron anvil had been dropped onto his sternum. Every time he tried to inhale, Cole’s knee sank a fraction of an inch deeper, denying his lungs the expansion needed to take in oxygen.

"Move... bastard..." Derek hissed through gritted teeth, his eyes bloodshot, his beard slick with saliva.

In a frantic burst of survival instinct, Derek reached his right hand around Cole’s ankle, attempting to scoop the leg for a desperate single-leg sweep from the bottom. At the same time, his left hand came up—not to push the hip, but clawing aggressively toward Cole’s face, his fingers curling into hooks aiming for Cole’s eyes. A blatant, dirty foul that would get anyone disqualified in a sanctioned tournament.

The surrounding soldiers sucked in their breath. "Hey! Ref!" someone yelled.

Cole didn't need a referee.

As Derek’s fingers came within four inches of his face, Cole’s left hand fired like a striking viper. He caught Derek’s wrist in a thumb-less C-clamp grip, arresting the forward motion of the gouge with shocking power. Without pausing, Cole rotated his own wrist outward, applying a brutal hyper-pronation to Derek’s joint that forced the larger man’s elbow to lock out at maximum extension.

Cole leaned forward, planting the palm of his right hand directly onto Derek’s jaw, shoving his head flat against the mat, turning Derek’s face entirely away from him.

"Rule one," Cole murmured, his voice cutting through Derek’s panicked gasps. "Never commit your hands to space you cannot defend."

Derek screamed as Cole dropped his weight slightly, the torque on Derek’s wrist threatening to snap the small bones of his carpal tunnel. Derek’s legs kicked wildly against the vinyl, but there was no traction, no leverage, no escape. His black belt rank meant nothing here; every system of defense he had built over a decade of sport competition relied on an opponent who engaged within an agreed-upon rhythm. Cole Bennett was not engaging in a rhythm; he was methodically dismantling a machine piece by piece.

With Derek’s head turned and his arm pinned, Cole swung his left leg around in a tight, devastating circle, sliding his shin directly over Derek’s throat.

The room gasped.

It was an inverted neon-belly transition—a rare, lethal control position used almost exclusively in high-threat combatives to completely immobilize a combative suspect while maintaining full 360-degree situational awareness of the surrounding room.

Derek was pinned by his own neck. He reached both hands up to tear at Cole’s shin, his fingers frantically digging into Cole’s camouflage pants, but the leverage was absolute. Cole didn't even need to use his hands to hold him. Cole sat on his throat with balanced, terrifying composure, his hands resting lightly on his own knees.

Sarah watched from the edge, her hand slowly dropping from her bruised neck. Her jaw was slack. She had spent the last two months listening to Derek boast about his invincible guard, his impenetrable submission defense, his status as an untouchable titan on this base.

And now, her brother had reduced him to a flailing, suffocating wreck in less than forty seconds.
