Chapter 25 - The Pipeline from Savannah

"Maya had nothing to do with this," Cole said, his voice dropping into a low, lethal hum that vibrated in the confined space of the tactical vehicle.
"She had everything to do with it, whether she knew it or not," Miller snapped back. "Silva didn't trust Derek. Silva thought Derek was getting soft, spending too much time playing local martial arts hero. Silva told Derek yesterday: *'Show me you still have the stomach to break people. Show me you’re a wolf, or the deal is off.'* That's why Derek set up that sparring session tonight, Bennett. It wasn't an open mat. It was a closed-circuit broadcast for Silva’s lieutenants sitting in a luxury suite in Miami."
The truth landed like a sledgehammer, but Cole’s face remained stone. The rage inside him didn't flare hot; it calcified, turning into cold, brittle diamond.
"He targeted her," Cole whispered.
"She was the best female grappler in the regional circuit," Miller said quietly. "Derek knew that if he dominated her—if he showed zero mercy, if he choked her out cold and held the choke past the tap on camera—it would prove to Silva that he wasn't compromised by sentimentality. It was a display of cruelty designed to secure a fifty-million-dollar cartel contract."
"And you let him do it."
"We didn't know!" Miller’s voice finally broke, a flash of genuine anger surfacing through the colonel’s rigid exterior. "We don't manage Derek’s day-to-day gym calendar. Katherine runs his handler comms. By the time my tactical team intercepted the live feed from the gym's internal system, your sister was already on the canvas, and you were walking through the front door like the Angel of Death."
Miller turned the tablet around, showing Cole a still frame from the Iron Vault’s security camera.
It was an image of Cole standing over Derek Vance, Derek’s arm bent backward at a horrific, impossible angle, his mouth open in an agonizing scream.
"Silva’s people were watching that feed live, Cole," Miller said, his voice dead serious. "They didn't just see Derek get beaten. They saw him get completely dismantled by a professional. In Silva’s world, a man who gets broken like that is either an informant who failed to protect himself, or a liability who needs to be erased along with everyone associated with him."
"Derek’s cover didn't just blow," Cole realized. "Silva is going to scrub the entire operation."
"Which brings us to the hospital," Miller said coldly. "Silva’s clean-up crew is already mobile. They know Derek was using the gym. They know a girl caused the incident that led to his destruction. If Silva thinks your sister is a federal plant—or if he thinks she’s a witness who can connect Derek to the cartel before Silva’s men can pull their money out of the port—she won't survive the night."
Cole's jaw clenched so hard the muscles jumped against his cheek.

"I told you Katherine has men at Memorial Health," Miller continued. "That wasn't a threat against you, Bennett. That was a perimeter defense. Because two hours ago, a four-man hit team linked to the Los Zetas enforcement arm crossed the state line from Florida. They aren't coming for Derek. Derek is in a secure military hospital under armed guard. They are coming for Maya."
