Chapter 5 - The Threshold of Secrets

Camilla’s fingers were two inches from the paper when a heavy black leather boot stepped directly into her path.

Domenico did not kick her. He simply planted his boot onto the floor with immovable authority, blocking her reach. Before her hand could bypass his ankle, Domenico bent down at the waist, moving with the smooth, fluid speed of a practiced athlete.

His heavily tattooed right hand—etched with the black iron bands and ancient family ciphers—swept downward, his long fingers closing around the thick, brittle vellum of the envelope.

"DON'T OPEN IT!" Camilla screamed.

Her voice was raw, tearing her vocal cords, echoing off the high crystal chandeliers in a desperate, unhinged wail. She lunged forward on her bleeding knees, her manicured fingers clawing upward, grasping frantically at the rolled cuff of Domenico’s white linen shirt, trying to drag his arm down with all the frantic strength left in her body.

"Domenico, please! In the name of God, don't look at it! It’s private! It belongs to my father’s estate! You have no right!"

Domenico did not flinch beneath her claws.

With a cold, single-minded detachment, Domenico brought his left forearm down in an iron wedge, peeling her hands from his sleeve and shoving her backward with an effortless flick of his arm. Camilla fell back onto the marble, her palms pressing into a bed of sharp porcelain fragments, leaving small, red beads of blood across the polished floor.

Domenico straightened to his full, towering height.

He stood in the center of the lavish parlor, illuminated by the golden shafts of the afternoon sun. Behind his right leg, Sofia remained perfectly safe, her small fingers still hooked securely into the seam of his black trousers, her crying silenced by the absolute, immovable safety that his presence provided. On the velvet couch, Marco lay wheezing, clutching his bruised chest, his face the color of wet ashes. On the floor, Camilla knelt amidst the ruins of the heirloom urn, her blonde hair falling in loose, wild strands around her pale face, her hands trembling as blood dripped onto her cream silk skirt.

Domenico lifted the envelope to eye level.

The vellum was thick, heavy, and brittle with age, bearing the subtle scent of dried lavender and stale tobacco. The dark-red wax seal—the imperial eagle and serpent of Don Vittorio Romano—remained completely intact, unbroken for over a decade. On the front of the envelope, written in the sharp, sloping fountain-pen script of his late father, was a single handwritten line:

Per Domenico — La Verità del Sangue.

(For Domenico — The Truth of the Blood.)

Domenico’s jaw tightened. A deep, cold dread began to stir beneath the surface of his syndicate armor.

His father had died five years ago of a sudden myocardial infarction in his private study. In the weeks leading up to his death, the old Don had grown distant, paranoid, repeatedly questioning the lineage of the family's assets, locking himself in the library for hours. The family had assumed it was the creeping dementia of an aging king.

Now, holding the artifact that had been sealed inside a false-bottomed urn for years, Domenico realized his father had not been losing his mind.

His father had been hiding a secret from the very vipers who shared his breakfast table.
