Chapter 3 - The Gathering of Shadows

Camilla caught her balance against the arm of the velvet sofa, her breathing ragged, her platinum hair disheveled. Her chest rose and fell in rapid, panicked gasps, her fingers clawing at the crushed velvet upholstery. Her eyes darted frantically past Domenico’s hip, locking not onto the child, but onto the yellowed vellum envelope lying exposed among the jagged white porcelain on the floor.

Behind Domenico’s leg, Sofia’s small hands gripped the fabric of his black trousers with desperate, white-knuckled ferocity. The toddler buried her tear-streaked face against the back of his knee, her small body shuddering with silent, frightened sobs.

Domenico did not look down, but his left hand reached backward, his large, ink-etched fingers gently stroking Sofia’s soft curls, murmuring a single, soothing syllable beneath his breath that only the child could hear. He kept his eyes locked on Camilla, reading the erratic dilation of her pupils, the pale sheen of cold sweat glistening on her forehead, and the unnatural, desperate terror that went far beyond the destruction of an antique vase.

"Domenico..." Camilla stammered, her voice high and unstable, her hands smoothing down her cream gown with frantic, trembling strokes. "She... she was out of control. She could have hurt herself on the glass. I was... I was disciplining her. You let her wander this house like she owns it—"

"I told you once," Domenico interrupted, each syllable falling like a slab of granite onto a tomb, "if you ever raise a hand in this house again, I will break it."

Before Camilla could choke out another lie, the heavy mahogany double doors leading from the north gallery were violently shoved open.

Marco Romano burst into the parlor.

At thirty-eight, Marco was Domenico’s first cousin—a man whose life had been bankrolled by the syndicate’s offshore trusts, yet who possessed none of Domenico’s discipline or commanding presence. Marco was tall and dark-haired, but his frame was thinner, his face flushed with alcohol and nervous sweat. His black suit was disheveled, the top two buttons of his dress shirt undone, his silk tie hanging crookedly around his collar. He had clearly rushed from his private quarters after hearing the porcelain shatter across the stone.

"What the hell happened in here?" Marco demanded, his voice slurred with agitation as he adjusted his cuffs. "Camilla, I heard screaming all the way down the hall—"

Marco stopped dead in his tracks.

His gaze swept over the parlor: Domenico standing like an iron sentinel in his black vest, Sofia trembling behind his knee, Camilla backed against the velvet sofa.

Then, Marco’s eyes drifted downward to the floor.

He saw the shattered Royal Vienna urn. He saw the piles of white and gold porcelain shards.

And resting in the center of the debris, the dark-red wax seal gleaming under the chandelier light, was the thick yellowed envelope.

Every trace of color drained from Marco’s face in a fraction of a second.

The flushed, drunken arrogance that had carried him through the doors evaporated entirely, replaced by a raw, suffocating panic that made his knees tremble beneath his trousers. His jaw fell slack; his hands dropped from his cuffs, trembling violently at his sides.

"No..." Marco whispered, his voice cracking into a dry, breathless croak.

He looked up at Camilla, whose eyes met his with an unspoken, desperate scream of sheer terror. The mutual recognition between husband and wife was instantaneous, absolute, and damning.

Marco took one staggering step forward, his boot crunching over a porcelain fragment, his arm reaching out in a blind, frantic lunge toward the center of the room.

"Give me that envelope!" Marco shouted, his voice pitching into a hysterical frenzy. "Domenico, don't look at it! Give it to me!"
