Chapter 3

I watched the blood leave him. Not dramatically, not the way it happens in films, but in the specific quiet way that happens when a person's body understands something before the mind has finished forming the question. His hand lowered. The pen touched the table without sound. The woman in the emerald dress rose halfway from her chair, her eyes fixed on the carrier against my chest, and then she looked at Ethan and his face told her everything she needed to know and she sat back down.

I walked forward. Steady. Both hands against Rose's back, the way I always held her when I was moving through a space I wasn't sure of, the contact a reassurance in both directions. Every lawyer in the room watched me cover the length of that table in complete silence, and not one of them spoke, because whatever meeting they had prepared for, it was not this one.

I stopped across from Ethan.

"Whose baby is that?" he said. His voice was barely above a whisper. Not cold. Not authoritative. The voice of a man who already knew and was asking because hearing it was the only thing left.

"Your daughter," I said.

The pen slipped from his fingers. It tapped once against the marble table and rolled two inches toward the papers and stopped.

A lawyer reached for the documents on instinct, the automatic reflex of someone whose job is to keep proceedings on track, and then his hand stopped and he pulled it back because the room had understood, all at once, that the proceedings were no longer on track and there was nothing in his training that covered this specific detour.

Ethan's face had gone the color of the white sky outside the glass wall. He was looking at Rose with an expression I had never seen on him before, not in three years of marriage, not once. He looked, for the first time in my experience of him, like a man who did not know what to do with what he was seeing. The certainty that had always occupied his face like a permanent resident had simply vacated.
