Chapter 8 - The Mistake of Floor 68

A faint, humorless smile touched the corner of Adrian Vale’s lips, though his pale gray eyes remained entirely cold.

"Blake Rourke doesn't have the courage, or the money, to send anyone through my door," Adrian said. His voice was calm, conversational, yet every syllable carried the quiet, terrifying gravity of absolute authority.

He slowly pushed himself off the doorframe, walking with unhurried, deliberate steps toward a low leather armchair six feet away from where she sat crumpled on the floor. He did not corner her; he deliberately sat down, resting his elbows on his knees, holding the glass between his hands, bringing himself down to her eye level.

"You made a mistake at the top of the fire stairs," Adrian explained, his gaze dropping briefly to the purple brand on her wrist before returning to her frightened hazel eyes. "The master keycard Rourke gave you opens the emergency egress doors for the entire executive floor. His suite is on the east wing. This is the west. You turned left instead of right in the dark."

The realization hit Mara like a physical blow.

She closed her eyes, a shuddering breath rattling in her throat as the memory of the past two hours reassembled itself in her mind.

The shouting in Rourke’s private office. The look in Blake’s eyes when he realized she had copied the offshore shell ledgers to protect herself from the federal subpoenas. The sudden, violent strike of his hand grabbing her wrist, twisting it until she fell to her knees. She remembered kicking his shin with her heel, ripping herself free, and bolting through the private dining room into the service corridor. She had run up the fire escape in the freezing dark, soaked, half-blind with panic, seeing an open utility threshold and stumbling through the first suite door that flashed green against her bypass card.

She hadn't found safety. She had stumbled straight into the private lair of another predator.

"I... I’m sorry," Mara choked out, tears of humiliation and bone-deep exhaustion burning behind her eyelids. She tried to push herself up using the bedpost, but her legs were trembling so violently they could barely support her weight. "I didn't... I didn't know anyone lived here. I thought it was an empty corporate unit. I’ll leave. I’ll get my coat and I’ll—"

"You're not going anywhere, Miss Bennett," Adrian said.

The command was gentle, but it was an iron wall.

Mara’s breath hitched. Panic flared hot in her chest once more. She pulled the oversized charcoal shirt tighter around her knees, her eyes wide, darting toward the corridor. "Please. I don't have anything of yours. I just took the shirt because... because my clothes were soaked through from the street. I won't tell anyone I was here. Just let me go downstairs."

"Downstairs?" Adrian tilted his head slightly, his gaze piercing through her defenses. "There are four private security contractors sitting in an unmarked Cadillac Escalade at the corner of Fifty-Seventh right now. There are two more watching the service elevators on sixty-six. If you walk into that lobby in your wet clothes with that wrist, you won't make it past the revolving doors."

Mara went utterly pale. The room seemed to tilt beneath her. "He’s already looking for me."

"He never stopped," Adrian said softly.

He set his bourbon glass down on the low wooden side table with a quiet, dull thud. Slowly, deliberately, Adrian leaned forward, resting his tattooed forearms on his knees, his gray eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that demanded the truth.

"Now," Adrian murmured, his voice dropping into that dark, velvety register that made captains of industry tremble. "Tell me why Blake Rourke tried to break your arm."
