Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Light

Elena reached into the pocket of her woolen trousers.

She did not pull out a hairpin or a crowbar. She withdrew a heavy, tarnished brass key nearly six inches long, its bit cut into three intricate, stepped flag notches—the master override key that old Don Antonio had hidden inside the hollowed base of his bronze bust of Julius Caesar in the private library forty years ago. An emergency key that only the Don and his trusted wife had ever known existed.

Marco stared at the key in her palm, his mouth falling open in sheer, unadulterated shock. "My father’s key..."

"Your father trusted me more than he ever trusted Julian, Marco," Elena whispered.

She stood up, slid the heavy brass flag into the ancient keyhole of the tumbler padlock, and gripped the bow with both hands. Her knuckles turned white as she leaned her full body weight into the turn.

CLACK-CHUNK.

The internal brass springs released with a sound like a small gunshot echoing off the granite walls.

Elena ripped the heavy padlock from the hasp, threw it aside onto the stone, and grasped the vertical iron handle of the cage door. She pulled with all her strength. The rusted hinges shrieked in protest, but the heavy iron door swung outward, standing wide open to the chamber.

Marco did not hesitate. Despite twelve days of starvation, despite the fever burning in his blood, the sovereign of the Moretti family rose from the floor of his tomb. He stepped across the iron threshold on trembling, unsteady legs, his tall frame unfolding until he stood at his full height in the amber lamplight.

He didn't reach for a weapon. He didn't curse his brother’s name.

He pulled Elena into his chest with an iron, desperate ferocity, burying his bearded face in the curve of her neck, his arms wrapping around her as if he were anchoring his soul back into the earth. They stood together in the center of the vault for ten sacred seconds, their heartbeats merging into a single, defiant rhythm that no cage could ever contain.

Marco pulled back slightly, his dark gray eyes clear, lethal, and burning with an ancient, sovereign flame. In his left hand, he was still holding Mimi—the dirty plush rabbit with the missing button eye.

"Where is she?" Marco rasped, his baritone vibrating with absolute, unyielding authority.

"Asleep in her bed," Elena said, taking his hand, her fingers interlacing with his scarred knuckles. "Wearing her red bow."

"Let's go get our daughter," Marco said softly.

They climbed the stone steps together, leaving the open cage behind them in the dark.

Above them, through the floorboards of the great estate, the wind howled off the river, but the shadows were already retreating. The rightful master of the Moretti house was rising from the bedrock, carrying his daughter’s rabbit in his hand, ready to reclaim his home and lead his family out into the bright, limitless light of a new dawn.
