Chapter 3 - The Child's Accusation

Marcus took two long, assertive strides toward the marble island, reaching into his charcoal jacket as if preparing to retrieve a phone or signal the perimeter guards. His presence filled the space with an air of decisive authority, projecting the role of the loyal younger brother stepping in to shield the patriarch from betrayal.
"Come here, Lily-bug," Marcus cooed softly, extending a manicured hand toward the hem of Alexander’s trousers where the little girl remained concealed. "Come to Uncle Marcus. Let Daddy deal with the bad help."
The reaction was instantaneous and visceral.
Lily let out a shrill, suffocated shriek—a sound of pure, unadulterated terror that cut through the silence of the mansion like an axe through bone. She retreated further, pressing herself so hard into the back of Alexander’s legs that her forehead bruised against his calf. She refused the outstretched hand, shuddering as if an open flame had been brought near her skin.
Alexander’s left hand dropped down, moving with feather-light precision to rest over Lily’s head, his large, calloused palm cupping the silk red ribbon of her right pigtail. His touch was an immovable shield. He did not let Marcus take another step.
"Stay back, Marcus," Alexander ordered.
The command was soft, but it carried a freezing edge that made Marcus’s boots halt instantly against the polished marble. Marcus blinked, his charming smile faltering for a fraction of a second before he smoothed it over with an uneasy laugh.
"Alex, she’s just frightened by the shouting," Marcus reasoned, gesturing with an open palm. "You know how sensitive she's been since we lost Elena. She doesn't understand what's happening."
Alexander did not answer. He slowly bent his knees, sinking into a controlled crouch until his broad shoulders were level with his daughter. His black suit fabric strained across his muscular thighs as he turned his face toward the small girl trembling behind his legs.
Lily peeked around the seam of his trousers. Her large brown eyes—so impossibly identical to Elena’s—were swimming with tears that clung to her dark lashes. Her lower lip quivered uncontrollably, her cheeks flushed crimson against the delicate lace of her collar. She clutched the tiny beige bear against her chest like an amulet, her small shoulders hitching with silent, panicked sobs.
"Lily," Alexander murmured, his voice softening into a gentle, private register that no other living soul in the underworld had ever heard. "Look at me, sweetheart. Daddy’s here. No one touches you. What's wrong?"
Lily did not look at her father. Her gaze was locked entirely on Marcus.
Slowly, deliberately, the two-year-old lifted her right arm from the body of her stuffed bear. Her small, chubby index finger extended, pointing straight through the gap between Alexander’s shoulder and the marble island, aiming directly at Marcus Romano’s chest.
Her voice, when it broke through the quiet, carried the unmistakable, uncorrupted clarity of a toddler who had not yet learned how to deceive.
"Uncle hurt Mommy."

The words landed not as a sound, but as an physical detonation.
Alexander Romano stopped breathing. Every tendon in his neck locked into cords of rigid steel; the crowned serpent tattooed along his throat went completely still. The chandelier above seemed to hum with an unbearable frequency. In all his years of blood, betrayal, and tactical warfare, he had never felt the ground crumble beneath his feet—until three words from a child in a red dress rewrote the architecture of his entire reality.
