Chapter 10 - THE ROAR OF THE PROTECTORS

The quiet neighborhood erupted into motion.
The eleven members of the Black Mesa Riders swung their legs over their heavy motorcycles in perfect synchronization. Chrome gleamed under the final dark orange rays of the setting sun as twelve heavy V-twin engines roared back to life, one after another, filling Elm Street with a powerful, thunderous symphony of mechanical strength.
Cole walked back to his custom chopper, swinging his leg over the leather seat. He reached down, turned the ignition key, and brought his engine to a deep, throaty rumble.
Before pulling away from the curb, Cole paused. He turned his head and looked back toward the small wooden lemonade stand on the grass.
Rachel stood on the front lawn, her arm wrapped tightly around her daughter’s shoulders, a tear-streaked smile resting on her face for the first time in two years.
Beside her, tiny Lily Carter stood tall in her bright yellow summer dress, waving her small hand wildly toward the row of bikers.
Cole raised his gloved right hand to his temple, giving Lily a sharp, solemn military-style salute.

Then, Cole twisted the throttle.
The heavy chopper surged forward, leading the formation of twelve motorcycles as they rolled down Elm Street into the deep purple glow of the twilight. The roar of the engines echoed off the suburban homes, a protective shield of sound that lingered long after the red taillights vanished around the corner, leaving the small house with its porch light shining bright and safe against the coming night.
