Chapter 2 - The Stare of the Don

The private study of Vincent Castalano was a cathedral of absolute authority. Towering, twenty-foot floor-to-ceiling windows framed the manicured forest beyond, casting long rectangular shadows over a vast sea of white marble. Massive crystal chandeliers hung like frozen waterfalls from the coffered ceiling, their pendants catching the sunlight and throwing diamond fractals across the walls of dark walnut bookcases. In the center of the room sat a massive cream-colored sofa, upholstered in bespoke Italian leather.

Vincent sat on the edge of the sofa, reviewing a thick stack of shipping manifests with cold, mechanical detachment. At forty, he was a terrifying physical presence. His frame was broad-shouldered and heavily muscled, encased in an impeccably tailored black suit that cost more than a working family’s annual mortgage. His black dress shirt was open at the collar, revealing the thick column of his throat where black rose tattoos coiled upward into his neatly groomed dark beard. More black ink mapped the muscular expanse of his forearms and the backs of his hands, stark against the heavy silver wristwatch resting on his wrist.

Standing three paces to his right was Renzo Moretti, Vincent’s underboss, clad in a sharp charcoal-black suit, holding an encrypted tablet. By the arched entrance stood two stone-faced security guards, their hands resting loosely near their jackets, earpieces humming with radio traffic. The atmosphere was suffocatingly tense, the silence broken only by the scratch of Vincent’s fountain pen.

Then came the soft, rhythmic patter of rubber soles on marble.

Renzo’s hand twitched toward his holster, his eyes snapping downward as a streak of pastel blue and pink tumbled into the center of the Persian rug. The two guards stiffened, their expressions freezing in sheer disbelief.

Mia marched forward with utter, unshakeable confidence. Her layered tulle skirt bounced with every stride, her ribbon bows bobbing proudly atop her golden-brown curls. She stopped directly in front of the cream sofa, planted her small shoes apart, and leaned back on her heels.

Vincent didn't look up immediately. His pen completed a signature before he slowly raised his head, an aura of icy irritation rolling off him in waves. He was accustomed to captains trembling in this room; he was accustomed to grown men sweating through their collars when he fixed them with his dark, hooded gaze.

He looked down, expecting an intruder, a threat, or an idiot who had lost their mind.

Instead, he found a three-year-old girl staring right into his eyes.

Mia didn't flinch. She raised one chubby, dimpled finger and pointed it directly at his bearded face, her big brown eyes wide and totally unimpressed.

"You look mad!" Mia announced.

The words bounced off the marble walls with bold, crystal clarity.

Behind Vincent, Renzo inhaled sharply, choking on his own breath. The guards by the door widened their eyes, their hands going dead limp against their sides. Nobody spoke to Vincent Castalano like that. Nobody looked at the Don of New York and pointed a finger.

Vincent’s dark eyes narrowed into razor-thin slits. Slowly, deliberately, he raised one dark eyebrow, fixing the toddler with the infamous, predatory glare that had made federal prosecutors reconsider their careers. His heavy jaw clenched, the muscles along his neck bunching beneath the black rose ink, his head tilting a fraction of an inch to the left. It was a look designed to dismantle a man's courage piece by piece.

Mia didn't blink. She studied every contour of his scowl with clinical fascination.

Then, she crossed her tiny arms over her floral-embroidered bodice. She scrunched her nose, dragged her own soft eyebrows down into a comically tight V, pushed her lower lip out, and cocked her chin to the side in a mirror image of Vincent’s exact posture.

"Grrr!" Mia growled, deepening her toddler pitch into a theatrical rumble. "I'm the scary boss!"
