Chapter 7 - The Whisper in the Storm

The air in the chapel seemed to freeze once more.
Ethan knelt on the cold marble, holding his daughter’s small shoulders, his brow knitting together in sudden, sharp confusion. Nora wasn't looking at the weeping woman collapsed on the altar behind them. She wasn't looking at the shocked crowd or the stained-glass windows. She was staring directly into her father's eyes, her breathing rapid, her hands clutching his lapels with a desperation that eclipsed everything they had just witnessed.
"Nora?" Ethan’s voice softened, a new, cold dread taking root in the pit of his stomach. "What is it, sweetheart? The video... we heard it. She’s going to prison. It’s done."
Nora leaned forward, pulling herself up onto her tiptoes. Her small fingers dug through the silk of his tie, pulling his head down toward her face. Her long light-brown curls brushed against his rugged, stubbled cheek, shielding her lips from the staring guests and the weeping bride on the floor.
She pressed her mouth directly against his ear.
Her voice was a trembling, terrified whisper that cut through the silence of the church like a razor through silk.
"Dad," Nora whispered, her breath hot and shaking against his skin. "That's not the secret I was scared to tell you."
Ethan’s heart stopped.
The blood drained from his face so fast he felt dizzy. His dark eyes widened in complete, paralyzed horror. His hands, resting on Nora’s shoulders, went as rigid as iron.
Not the secret?
A fake pregnancy. A six-month conspiracy to siphon sixty million dollars from his family's legacy trust. An escaped federal felon living inside his perimeter. If that was not the secret—if that mountain of grotesque deceit was merely the prelude—what in God’s name had his eight-year-old daughter been carrying alone in the dark?
Ethan slowly pulled back, his gaze searching every millimeter of Nora’s pale, trembling face. "Nora... what are you talking about?"
Before Nora could answer, Vanessa’s head snapped up from the floor.
Even in her ruined, hysterical state, Vanessa had seen the shift in Ethan’s posture. She had seen the raw terror ignite in the eyes of the man she had tried to destroy. Her tear-streaked face contorted into an expression of frantic, wild alarm, her gaze darting between the little girl and the smartphone still resting in Nora’s left hand.
"No," Vanessa whispered, her voice cracking into a high-pitched, screeching panic that made the bridesmaids flinch. "No, no, no! Nora, don't! You swore you wouldn't! Ethan, don't listen to her! She’s eight years old! She’s making it up! She’s traumatized!"
Vanessa scrambled to her feet, paying no heed to the deflated silicone pad dragging from the torn hem of her wedding dress. She lunged forward, her arms outstretched, her eyes wild, aiming straight for Nora.
"Get her away from him!" Vanessa screamed, completely losing her mind. "Shut her up!"
Ethan didn't hesitate. He rose from his knee in one explosive, fluid motion, stepping fully in front of Nora, turning his body into a human fortress. His hand came up, palm out, stopping Vanessa five inches from his chest. The pure, murderous fury radiating from his dark eyes was so intense that Vanessa froze, her breath catching in her throat, trembling beneath the shadow of his towering frame.
"If you take one more step toward my daughter," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a register so dark and lethal it made the hairs on the back of the best man's neck stand up, "I will not wait for the police."
Vanessa swallowed hard, her chest heaving beneath the loose, wrinkled lace, her hands shaking violently.
Ethan didn't look at her again. He turned his head slightly, keeping his body positioned between Vanessa and his child, his voice dropping to a low, intense murmur that was meant only for Nora.

"Tell me, Nora," Ethan commanded gently, his voice thick with terror. "Tell me right now."
Nora took a deep, shuddering breath, her small fingers reaching into the hidden pocket of her ivory organza dress one final time.
