Chapter 5 - The Frozen Altar

"Ethan, please, let me explain—" Vanessa’s voice cracked, rising into a desperate, shrill register that echoed off the high rafters. She took a stumbling step backward, her high heels catching on the train of her gown, nearly sending her crashing into the communion rail. She was still clutching her abdomen with both hands, trying to smooth out the wrinkled, hollow lace that now hung around her waist like an empty sack. "It’s not what it looks like! I can explain everything, I swear to God I can explain!"
"What is this?" Ethan demanded.
The words did not come out as a shout; they were dragged from the deepest, darkest chamber of his chest, vibrating with a lethal, trembling intensity that made the minister reflexively step back two paces. Ethan closed the distance between them until he was standing less than two feet from her, his dark eyes burning with an unholy mixture of betrayal and absolute disgust. He reached out, his scarred fingers catching a handful of the sagging lace at her hip, lifting it slightly to expose what lay beneath.
Tucked tightly under the designer slip was an elaborate, medical-grade silicone prosthetic—a dual-chambered pneumatic bladder fitted with a microscopic brass inflation valve, secured around her ribs by three wide bands of industrial Velcro. It was a professional, film-grade illusion, engineered to simulate the precise weight, texture, and profile of human tissue under clothing.
"You faked a pregnancy," Ethan said, the reality solidifying on his tongue like cold iron. His chest heaved beneath his tailored tuxedo, his breath coming in short, furious bursts. "You looked me in the eye... you let me put my hands on you... you let me tell my daughter she was going to have a brother..."
"I had to!" Vanessa sobbed, the tears finally breaking through her makeup, streaking the pale foundation on her cheeks as her aristocratic veneer dissolved completely into manic terror. "We were losing you, Ethan! You were still mourning Clara! You were drifting away from me, and I loved you too much to let you go! I was going to tell you—we were going to use a surrogate, we were going to make it real—"
"A surrogate?" Ethan repeated, the sheer absurdity of the lie hitting him like a physical blow. He let go of the fabric as if it had burned his skin, wiping his hand on his trouser leg in profound revulsion. "You brought a surrogate into my home without my knowledge? You staged a pregnancy to trap me into an estate contract?"
"Ethan, think of our future! Think of what we built!" she pleaded, reaching out with her manicured hands to grab his lapels.
Ethan caught her wrists before her fingers could touch his cloth. His grip was not violent, but it was unyielding, an iron barrier that stripped away any illusion that she held power over him. He shoved her hands away, his jaw clenched so hard a corded muscle pulsed beneath his stubbled cheek.
"You don't touch me," he whispered, his voice dangerously low. "You don't ever touch me again."
In the front pews, Ethan’s brother had already stepped into the aisle, his face dark with fury, signaling the private security guards stationed at the rear doors to move into the nave. The guests were murmuring loudly now, some pulling out phones, others whispering behind programs, the social scandal of the decade unfolding before their eyes in real time.

Vanessa turned her wild, frantic eyes toward Nora, who was standing quietly beside the altar steps, watching the collapse of the woman who had tried to replace her mother.
"You," Vanessa snarled, her voice dropping into a vicious, feral hiss, her finger shaking as she pointed at the child. "You little monster. You ruined this! You ruined everything!"
