Chapter 2

Sergeant Mason Rudd's voice cut through next, hard and controlled, but strained at the edges. "All elements hold. Find cover. Conserve ammunition. We are not dying in this hole."

For eight months, everyone in the company had treated Ava as the quiet sniper who never shot. They respected her navigation, her discipline, her ability to read land like a second language. They joked when she cleaned her rifle. They called her ghost rifle behind her back, half admiration, half insult. Ava had let them. She had been sent to the company to disappear, and disappearing was one of the few things she did better than shooting.

That morning, climbing into the Humvee, Holt had said, "There's a pool going around. Whether today's the day Staff Sergeant Stroud remembers she's a sniper."

Ava had closed the magazine pouch with one neat motion. "Maybe today's the day you remember you're a spotter."

The forest had been too still from the first ridge crossing. By 0947, that stillness broke. The first shot hit a tree beside Private Noah Grant's head. The second hit Specialist Jonah Cruz's medical pack. Then the forest erupted.

Through her scope, Ava saw what the Rangers below could not. Three enemy elements. Maybe fifty fighters. A disciplined, timed ambush that had waited until the squad stepped into the ravine, then closed every door.

Holt's voice shook as he ranged the closest movement. "Four hundred meters. North side. Multiple targets."

"Not first," Ava said.
