Chapter 6 - THE VELVET AND THE ANCIENT SILVER

The heavy black lid came off without a sound, releasing no gas, no smoke, and no mechanical click.

Inside the box, nestled deep within a thick bed of crushed black velvet, lay a single, solitary object.

It was a small, antique silver key.

It was barely three inches long, cast from heavy, oxidized sterling silver that had darkened into a deep charcoal patina along its intricate grooves. It was an old-world skeleton key, featuring an ornate, teardrop-shaped bow hand-chiseled with a pattern of entwined ivy leaves, a hollow cylindrical barrel, and a complex, multi-tiered bit designed to turn heavy tumblers inside an antique brass lockbox.

It was not a modern key. It did not open a safe deposit box at a commercial bank, nor did it fit any of the high-security deadbolts guarding the ground floor of the Moretti estate.

The instant Dante’s eyes locked onto the ivy pattern carved into the silver bow, the blood drained from his face with terrifying, unnatural speed.

His pupils dilated until they were almost entirely consumed by black. The casual, sovereign calm that had defined his features for twenty years shattered in a fraction of a second. His jaw locked so hard that a sharp muscle twitched violently beneath his dark stubble, his lips parting in a silent, stunned intake of air that rattled in the back of his throat.

Across the room, Clara Alvarez broke.

She did not think. She did not consider the three hundred guests watching her, nor the unbending code of hierarchy that governed the household.

Clara took two frantic, stumbling steps away from the dessert table, her hands flying to her mouth, her voice tearing through the gilded silence in a sharp, strangled sob:

“No…”

The word was tiny, but in the dead quiet of the ballroom, it sounded like a glass vase shattering on stone.

Guests gasped. Three city councilmen turned in their chairs, their eyes darting from the weeping housekeeper in her black uniform to the pale, menacing figure of Dante Moretti at the gift table.

Beside Dante, Sophie clutched the folds of her yellow silk dress, looking from her mother’s pale face up to the tall man she had tried to save, her little brow furrowed with deep, instinctive dread.
