Chapter 9 - The Anatomy of a Fall

Behind him, Sophia rushed into the vestibule, her red silk gown rustling loudly against the stone. Her eyes were wild, darting between the emergency exits and Ethan’s paralyzed silhouette.
“Ethan!” Sophia cried, grabbing his lapel, her fingers digging through the tailored wool. “What is going on? People are leaving! The partners are walking out on the bill! Richard Vance just looked at me like I was a criminal! What did that bitch do?!”
Ethan slowly turned his head.
His face was completely drained of color, his skin an ashen, translucent gray that made his dark stubble stand out like soot against chalk. His piercing blue-gray eyes were hollow, deadened by a realization so catastrophic that his brain could barely process the parameters of the ruin.
He looked down at Sophia’s red dress. He looked at the five-carat ruby ring on her finger. He looked at the woman he had chosen, the woman whose petty jealousies and shallow vanity he had placed above the quiet, devoted wife who had lived in his house for three years.
“Shut up,” Ethan whispered.
Sophia blinked, her jaw dropping in theatrical disbelief. “What? Ethan, how dare you speak to me—”
“I said shut up!” Ethan roared, his voice tearing from his throat with a violent, animal ferocity that caused the maitre d' across the lobby to drop his reservation binder.
He shoved Sophia’s hands away from his chest with enough force to send her stumbling back two paces, her designer heels catching the edge of a marble planter.
“You wanted to destroy her,” Ethan rasped, his voice trembling with an unholy mixture of terror, rage, and self-loathing. His chest heaved against his shirt, his expensive Audemars Piguet watch ticking mockingly against his wrist. “You wanted to show everyone she was nothing. You poured the wine. You staged the whole goddamn thing because you couldn't stand that she had my name!”
“Ethan, she attacked me!” Sophia screamed, tears of real panic finally breaking through her foundation. “She’s a nobody! Her family has nothing!”
“Her family owns my firm, Sophia!” Ethan shrieked, the words tearing through the gilded lobby like shrapnel. “She owns the roof over your head! She owns the car you drove here tonight! She owns every single cent I have ever touched in my miserable life!”

He didn't wait to watch Sophia’s face collapse into absolute, irreversible horror.
Ethan turned on his heel and slammed his body through the heavy brass revolving doors, bursting out into the cold Chicago night, desperate for air, desperate for time, desperate to reverse the execution he had just signed with his own right hand.
