Chapter 2 - THE HOLD

The elevator doors reopened by themselves.

Vanessa stepped out first.

“What is wrong with this system?”

The stranger looked at her.

“Nothing.”

His voice was calm.

That irritated her immediately.

“Then unlock it.”

“No.”

Ethan came out behind her.

“Who are you?”

The man removed a slim leather identification wallet.

Not a Crownpoint badge.

A law firm credential.

CALEB WARREN

WARREN & PIKE

SPECIAL COUNSEL

Olivia's expression changed before Vanessa's did.

“Special counsel for what?”

Caleb closed the wallet.

“The independent committee of the Crownpoint board.”

Nobody spoke.

Arthur continued putting towels back onto his cart.

Vanessa stared at Caleb.

“We have no independent committee.”

“You do as of eight this morning.”

Ethan laughed.

“No one informed me.”

“You're not on it.”

That ended the laugh.

Vanessa pointed toward the elevator.

“Why is my access blocked?”

Caleb looked at all three of them.

“Because your executive-floor privileges were placed on administrative hold at 4:02 p.m.”

“What?”

“Pending review of security records.”

Olivia went still.

Arthur noticed.

Caleb did too.

Ethan stepped closer.

“Which records?”

Caleb looked down at Arthur's cart.

Then at the red light still flashing inside the elevator.

“Old ones.”

Vanessa followed his eyes to Arthur.

Understanding arrived in the wrong order.

“You.”

Arthur placed the last spray bottle upright.

She stared.

“What did you do?”

Arthur answered:

“My job.”

“Don't play with me.”

“I emptied trash. Cleaned conference rooms. Recovered a maintenance module your facilities department marked for disposal.”

Olivia's eyes narrowed.

“What maintenance module?”

Arthur looked at Caleb.

Caleb answered.

“A local event-memory unit from the original executive-elevator controller.”

Ethan's face changed.

Only for a second.

Arthur saw it.

Caleb continued.

“The control system was replaced six weeks ago. Mr. Cole noticed the contractor had removed a hardware component that company records said should remain archived.”

Vanessa looked at Arthur.

“You dug through discarded equipment?”

“It was in a locked facilities cage.”

“You had no authority—”

Arthur interrupted.

“I have key access because I clean it.”

That shut her up.

Caleb added:

“And because Mr. Cole recognized the part.”

Ethan crossed his arms.

“He's a janitor.”

Caleb looked at him.

“No.”

Ethan frowned.

Caleb corrected himself.

“He works as a janitor now.”

Arthur looked at Caleb.

“That's enough.”

Caleb nodded.

He did not tell Arthur's story for him.

Good.

Vanessa looked between them.

“What is on the module?”

Caleb did not answer.

Olivia did.

“Local facial-event logs.”

Everyone turned.

Arthur studied her.

Olivia's face hardened again.

She had revealed too much.

Caleb said:

“Ms. Kent is correct.”

Vanessa's voice dropped.

“Those logs were migrated.”

“Not all of them.”

“Crownpoint's security vendor certified the migration.”

“Yes.”

“Then you're relying on abandoned hardware found by a cleaner?”

Caleb looked at Arthur.

“I am relying on evidence that will be forensically validated before anyone draws a conclusion.”

That was the right answer.

Vanessa hated it.

She pointed at Arthur.

“I want him off this floor.”

Caleb's expression barely moved.

“You no longer have the authority to order that.”

“What?”

“Your operational authority over building security, internal investigations, and employee discipline was temporarily suspended with your access.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“You cannot do that.”

“I didn't.”

“Who did?”

“The board committee.”

Vanessa looked toward Olivia.

Olivia was staring at the scanner.

The red light reflected against the glass.

Then she asked the question nobody else had.

“Does Arthur know why we're on hold?”

Caleb answered:

“No.”

Arthur looked at him.

Caleb met his eyes.

“Not yet.”

There.

Whatever had brought Caleb Warren to the forty-sixth floor was bigger than a broken elevator.

And Arthur was not the only person who had not been told the whole thing.
