Chapter 3 - HIS MOTHER’S VOICE

Mason cursed beneath me for nearly a minute before fear began replacing rage. He finally understood that strength was not going to restore his control.
“Get off me.”
“When you stop reaching for furniture.”
“You’re assaulting me.”
“My phone is recording. Try another version.”
His eyes moved toward the screen.
I asked again, “Who told you to take my bank card?”
He said nothing.
I shifted just enough to show him I could maintain control without injuring him.
“Who told you to threaten me?”
“My mother said you’d become difficult after the wedding.”
“What did she tell you to do?”
His breathing changed.
“She said I needed to establish rules early.”
“What rules?”
“She told me to control the money. Make sure you stopped calling your friends about private things. Make you understand that the house had two owners now.”
“It doesn’t.”
“It will.”
That answer mattered.
I reached into his pocket and removed his phone. The conversation with Linda was already open. There were dozens of messages, many sent before our wedding.
Do not give her time to settle in.
Get the payroll login first.
Once her direct deposit changes, she loses leverage.
Do not let her sister interfere.
She will cry. Ignore it.
Then I found the latest voice message and pressed play.
Linda’s voice filled the ruined dining room.
“Put her in her place today, Mason. If she fights back, hit her. I’ll be there first thing tomorrow morning to make sure she’s learned her lesson.”
When the message ended, Mason closed his eyes.
I stopped the recording on my phone, immediately uploaded it to secure cloud storage, and sent a copy to Naomi Price, the attorney who managed my mother’s trust.
Then I smiled at my husband.
“Perfect.”
May you like
His face went pale.
“Tomorrow,” I said, “we’ll give your mother exactly the show she came to see.”
