Chapter 6 - Lily Speaks

Lily gave her statement two days later.
Not because anyone pressured her.
Because she asked.
Her voice was weak. Her face still swollen. One hand clutched the blanket. I sat beside her but did not touch her until she reached for me first. Reyes stood near the wall. A female detective sat by the bed with a recorder and a notebook, speaking gently enough that every question sounded like a hand extended rather than a hook.
Lily told them about the party.
She had gone with her roommate. She drank one soda from a sealed can. She had argued with Ethan after he made a joke about scholarship girls “working for access.” Brandon filmed part of it. Tyler blocked the hallway when she tried to leave.
She got away once.
Then they followed her.
The worst details stayed private.
They belong to Lily, not to the world.
What mattered legally was enough.
Names.
Timeline.
Words.
Hands.
The stairwell.
The camera light that was already dark.
The laughter afterward.
The warning.
Ethan saying, “Your dad can’t touch our families.”
When Lily finished, she was shaking so hard the nurse paused the statement.
I held her hand.
She looked at me with the eye that could open.
“Are they going to make everyone hate me?”
The question broke me worse than seeing the bandages had.
Because that was what wealthy cruelty does. It does not only hurt the victim. It convinces them survival will become another punishment.
“No,” I said.
It was too absolute.
Maybe foolish.
But I said it anyway.
Reyes stepped forward.
“No, Lily. They are going to try. But they are not going to control the evidence.”
That answer seemed to matter more to her.
Control the evidence.
Not the gossip.
Not the whispers.
Not campus mythology.
The evidence.
By the end of the week, the story the boys’ families wanted had collapsed.
The stairwell camera outage had been manually triggered through a maintenance override connected to an athletic-facility account Brandon had access to through his work-study arrangement, arranged only on paper to satisfy scholarship optics despite his family’s wealth. Tyler’s phone contained messages about “shutting her up.” Ethan’s had deleted data, but deletion is not disappearance when people know how to look.
The boys were suspended.
Then arrested.
The college announced cooperation only after Reyes made clear that obstruction would not stay quiet.
I did not celebrate.
Every legal movement cost Lily something.
But each one also returned a piece of the world to its correct shape.
They did this.

She survived it.
Those two facts had to stand in that order.
