Chapter 5 - The Dinner Where They Lied Badly

Sophia waited until the following Sunday.
Richard always hosted family dinner at six. Eleanor liked rituals that made the family look intact, and Heather rarely missed a meal she did not have to cook. Sophia flew to Milwaukee without telling them, rented a car, and drove past the maple tree that had shaded her childhood like nothing inside the house had ever changed.
The dining room froze when she entered.
Eleanor recovered first. “Sophia. We weren’t expecting you.”
“No,” Sophia said. “I know.”
Richard set down the carving knife. “Is this about the wedding? Because if you came here to attack your mother—”
Sophia dropped the travel documents onto the table.
That ended his sentence.
Heather’s face went pale before anyone else spoke. Her guilt was faster than her defense.
Eleanor reached for the papers, but Sophia placed one hand over the Paris itinerary.
“Don’t touch them.”
Richard stood. “Watch your tone.”
“My tone cost less than your vacation.”
The relatives around the table shifted. Two cousins looked down at the itinerary and understood enough to stop chewing. Marcus stared at Heather, confused in a way that told Sophia he had known about the trip but not where the money came from.
Eleanor tried to gather dignity around herself. “We needed a break.”
“You needed a break from my wedding?”
Heather whispered, “Sophia, please.”
Sophia turned toward her sister. “You brought your children to Paris with the money I sent so they could watch me get married.”
Heather’s eyes filled. “Mom said you offered it as a family gift.”
Nathan, standing quietly in the doorway behind Sophia, finally stepped into the room.
“She specified flights and rooms for Maui,” he said. “Everything was booked under the wedding travel account.”
Richard pointed at him. “This is family business.”
Nathan did not raise his voice. “She is my family.”
That was when Sophia looked back at her father and realized the old fear was gone.
