Chapter 1 - Not According to the County

Ethan Walker slapped the sealed county envelope onto the wet hood of the yellow pickup.

Rain beaded across the paper.

Behind him, the old wooden garage leaned beneath the storm, its patched roof dripping onto the muddy yard. His father’s red toolbox sat open on a plywood bench near the door.

Cole pointed toward it.

“That’s stolen.”

Ethan kept his voice calm.

“My father hid it for the day they pushed me out.”

Sheriff Daniels stepped closer and took the envelope. He unfolded the document carefully over the truck hood while the neighbors gathered near the driveway fell silent.

Marlene moved forward.

“That land was abandoned.”

The sheriff studied the county seal, the parcel number, and the notarized signature at the bottom.

Then he looked up.

“Not according to the county.”

Cole’s face drained of color.

Marlene stared at the document as if it had appeared from nowhere.

Ethan stood beside the red toolbox, rain darkening his brown work jacket.

“Dad left me a beginning.”

No one spoke.

For three weeks, Marlene had told Ridge Hollow that Ethan was unstable, homeless, and stealing from the business.

Now the sheriff held proof that the land beneath their feet belonged to Ethan.

And that was only the first page.
