Chapter 3 - The Table Set for Cruelty

Sophie did not go straight to the dining room.

She led Maddie into the upstairs bathroom, closed the door, and told her to wash her face while Sophie “checked something.” Maddie clung to her wrist.

“Don’t leave me.”

“I’m not leaving,” Sophie said. “I’m making sure you’re safe.”

She locked the bathroom door from the inside, opened the small linen closet, and showed Maddie the emergency phone Sophie kept hidden there after one too many nights of Frank unplugging the house phone during arguments.

“If I’m not back in two minutes, call Mrs. Keller next door. Then call 911.”

Maddie nodded, trembling.

Sophie went down the back stairs.

The kitchen was too clean.

That was the first thing she noticed. Brenda’s kitchen was usually busy and cluttered before dinner, but now the counters had been scrubbed, the trash bin had a new liner, and the back door mat was missing. Near the side entrance, the concrete outside was wet in a narrow strip, as if someone had washed only one path and hoped no one would notice the edges.

Sophie stepped outside.

Behind the rosebush near the trash bins sat a heavy black plastic bag that had not been there that morning.

She did not open it fully.

She did not need to.

A glimpse, a smell, and Sadie’s blue collar half-hidden beneath damp paper towels told her enough.

Sophie backed away, one hand over her mouth, the world narrowing to a terrible point.

Then she took out her phone.

She photographed the bag without touching it further. The wet concrete. The empty hook where Sadie’s leash usually hung near the side door. The note from Maddie’s bedroom. The kitchen counter. The covered porcelain tureen in the dining room through the doorway.

Her hands were shaking at first.

Then they steadied.

She sent the photos to one person.

Detective Laura Brenner.

Sophie had met her months earlier after Brenda locked Maddie outside during a panic episode and a neighbor called for help. Nothing came of it then, not enough for charges, not enough for removal, but Detective Brenner had given Sophie her card.

“If things escalate,” she had said, “do not argue with them alone. Document and call.”

Sophie pressed send.

Then she walked into the dining room.
