Chapter 1 - The Convoy

The applause was still dying when the engines arrived.

I stood beside the marble fountain at the Royal Palms Plaza in Miami, soaked from my shoulders to my broken heels, water dripping from the ruined champagne silk of my dress. My hair clung to my face. My hands shook from cold and humiliation, but I kept my chin up while my father laughed with a champagne glass in his hand.

Then three black armored SUVs stopped at the mansion entrance.

The garden went quiet.

Guests turned from their gold chairs. Security guards near the walkway froze. My sister Penelope, still in her white wedding gown, lowered the hand she had been using to cover her laughing mouth.

The center SUV opened.

Blake Campbell stepped out in a tailored gray suit.

My father’s champagne glass lowered slowly.

“Blake Campbell?” he whispered.

Blake ignored every hand that reached for him. He walked straight through Miami’s high society like the crowd was furniture, stopped beside me, removed his cashmere overcoat, and draped it gently over my soaked shoulders.

For the first time all afternoon, someone touched me like I mattered.

I looked at my father.

“I told you to remember this moment.”

Penelope’s face went white.

Blake turned toward the crowd, his expression cold enough to silence the fountain.

“You just humiliated my wife in front of every person who owes me money.”

No one moved.

Not the guests.

May you like

Not the security.

Not my father, who suddenly looked much smaller kneeling beside the same fountain he had shoved me into.
