Chapter 6 - The House Went Silent
The petition was denied immediately.
Protective orders were issued that day preventing Margaret and Richard from any unsupervised contact with Emma. The police opened an investigation into child endangerment and unlawful restraint. Lauren, desperate to save herself, gave a full statement about what happened, including who held Emma in the chair and who brought the clippers.
It was Richard.
That detail haunted Ethan more than anything.
He asked to speak with me in the courthouse hallway.
“I should have gotten her out of that house years ago.”
“Yes,” I said.
“Are you leaving me?”
I almost laughed at the timing of the question.
“I’m leaving the version of my life where your family gets second chances at my daughter’s expense.”
He nodded like a man hearing his sentence.
The court later granted me temporary exclusive possession of the house because I had contributed the majority of the down payment and Emma needed continuity. Ethan moved into a furnished apartment. He did not fight me on that.
Richard was charged in connection with the theft, but the child-related case hit Margaret hardest. Church women stopped calling. Her charity board requested her resignation. The same neighbors who once admired her Christmas wreaths now crossed the street when she walked outside.
She wrote me two letters.
One blamed stress.
The other blamed me.
