Chapter 7 - Mother’s Call

Elaine called six days later.

Marlo was in New York completing final meetings when her mother’s name appeared on the screen.

She considered letting it ring.

Then she answered.

“Hello.”

Elaine’s voice was unusually warm.

“Marlo, sweetheart. Why didn’t you tell us?”

“Tell you what?”

“About Halden Vale.”

Marlo looked out across the city.

“How did you find out?”

“Your father knows someone whose son works in finance. Apparently your appointment is circulating privately.”

The family lie about her failed graduation had traveled quickly.

So had news of the offer.

Elaine laughed softly.

“Nine million dollars. I can’t even imagine.”

Marlo said nothing.

“We’re so proud of you.”

The words arrived too late and too easily.

“You told everyone I failed.”

Elaine sighed.

“I was trying to protect you.”

“From graduating?”

“You know what I mean.”

“No.”

“We couldn’t attend because Camille’s event had already been planned. I didn’t want relatives thinking we chose her birthday over your ceremony.”

“So you told them I failed.”

“It was complicated.”

“It was a lie.”

Elaine’s tone changed.

“We can discuss feelings later. Right now, your father and I need help.”

There it was.

Not apology.

Not regret.

Need.

Harold’s failed real-estate investment had placed the family home at risk. Camille had recently become engaged, and Elaine had promised to pay for a wedding larger than the birthday party.

They wanted Marlo to cover the mortgage arrears and wedding deposit.

“How much?” Marlo asked.

Elaine hesitated.

“About seven hundred fifty thousand.”

Marlo almost laughed.

Her mother had skipped graduation, announced her failure, then called for three-quarters of a million dollars.

The graduation lie had not been Elaine’s cruelest act.

It had been preparation.

If Marlo remained the family failure, any future success could be reframed as family property she owed them for “supporting her through difficult years.”

Elaine had not expected the success to arrive so quickly.
