Chapter 6 - The Guests Finish Recording

Phones were everywhere now.
Raised quietly at first.
Then openly.
Society guests who had arrived to watch me marry into the Hartwell name were now documenting that name catching fire.
Marjorie stepped toward me, but Conrad grabbed her wrist.
“Did you involve Preston in financing conversations?”
She jerked free.
“I protected this family.”
“No,” I said. “You tried to use my trust to cover a failing expansion and called it marriage.”
Preston looked around wildly, finally understanding that none of his charm could outrun video.
“Evelyn,” he said, lowering his voice, “let’s talk inside.”
That was the second time he revealed himself.
Cruelty wanted an audience.
Panic wanted privacy.
“No,” I said. “You chose the lawn.”
A sound moved through the guests. Not laughter. Not applause. Something closer to judgment finally finding a spine.
Miriam walked toward me and held out a clean wrap. Alma appeared from the side of the mansion with the flat shoes we had hidden beneath the chair cushion. Natalie stood near the aisle, watching my balance like a hawk, ready to step in but respecting the fact that I was still standing.
That mattered more than any revenge.
No one grabbed me.
No one controlled the moment for me.
They protected the space where I could control it myself.
Preston’s sister burst into tears near the arch. A groomsman slipped away toward the driveway. Conrad pulled out his phone, not to record, but to make a call no one in that family wanted him to make.
The board call.
Marjorie saw it too.
“Conrad,” she said sharply.
He ignored her.
I looked at Preston.
“You told people you were brave for loving me.”
His jaw flexed.
“I did love you.”
“No,” I said. “You loved the chair. It made you look noble. It made me look manageable.”
He flinched.
May you like
Good.
Some truths should leave marks without touching skin.
