Chapter 8 - The Apartment After Me

The consequences did not arrive like thunder.

They came through invoices.

Furniture replacement quotes. Temporary housing costs. Storage fees. Legal consultations. A landlord inspection scheduled after my termination notice. Utility contracts that had to be transferred to people whose credit and liquidity were worse than Eleanor imagined.

Arthur’s business, Whitmore Development Group, had not paid meaningful income in years. It had survived on loans, appearances, and my quiet payments disguised as household normalcy. Once I stopped covering the gaps, the shape of his life became visible.

Eleanor tried to move Camille and Oliver into a hotel suite “for a few weeks.”

A few weeks became impossible after Preston Mercer, Camille’s father, learned Arthur had no lease, no stable household, and no clean path to supporting another child without my money beneath him. Camille moved in with her parents before the baby came.

Arthur asked me to meet him twice.

The first time, I declined.

The second time, I agreed because Noah asked me to.

We met in a small café near Lincoln Center. Arthur looked exhausted. He said the words people always say once comfort has left them.

“I didn’t understand.”

“You understood enough not to ask questions.”

He winced.

“Noah read the letter.”

I waited.

“He won’t speak to my mother.”

“That is between them.”

“He wants to speak to you.”

That hurt more than Arthur’s betrayal.

Because I had loved Noah carefully for twelve years from a distance his grandmother built and his father permitted. I had not fought harder because I thought forcing myself into his grief would make me another thief in his life.

Maybe restraint had cost us both too much.

“I’ll speak to him,” I said.

Arthur nodded, eyes wet.

“I ruined everything.”

I looked at him.

“No. You let other people decide what I was worth. Then you were surprised when I accepted their valuation and left with everything I owned.”

May you like

He had no answer.

That was one of his most consistent qualities.
