Chapter 3 - Sweetheart

I stepped onto the grass near the mat and heard Lauren laugh from the deck.

“Don’t hurt her, Tyler. She still has cupcakes to frost.”

A few people chuckled. Someone raised a phone. My mother looked down at her plate, pretending she had not heard. That hurt more than Lauren’s voice. It always had. My mother did not create every cruel moment, but she survived them by letting me stand in the center alone.

Tyler rolled his shoulders. “Relax. I’ll just show you how to break a hold.”

“I didn’t ask.”

His grin widened. “That’s the problem. You never ask for help.”

He moved closer, lowering his voice just enough for the front row to feel like they were getting a private show. “I’ll go easy on you, sweetheart. You’re somebody’s mom.”

The word mom landed exactly where he wanted it to. Not as respect. As reduction. Like motherhood had turned my body into something harmless, my mind into something domestic, my history into a school calendar and grocery list.

I thought of my daughter asking why Uncle Tyler always talked over me.

I thought of my son practicing kindness because I told him strength without control was just noise.

I thought of the young woman I used to be, standing on wet sand before dawn, learning how to move without wasting anything.

I took off my sandals.

Lauren’s laugh sharpened. “Careful, don’t break a nail.”

I looked at Tyler. “You sure?”

He mistook the question for fear.

That was his first mistake.
