Chapter 1 - Nobody Moves

The handgun clicked behind Master Sergeant Sarah Vance’s head.

The sound froze every recruit on the Fort Benning firing line.

Sarah lay low against the polished concrete, one forearm braced beneath her. Brass casings surrounded her boots, and a metal ammunition box rested on its side several feet away.

Commander Harlan Pike stood over her with the weapon angled downward.

“Nobody moves until she stops talking.”

Private Miller backed toward the weapons table.

Minutes earlier, he had been laughing at Sarah’s size, her assignment badge, and the M24 rifle in her hands.

Now his face was pale.

Sarah looked past Pike toward the overturned ammunition box.

A strip of black tape had peeled loose beneath its lid.

Under it sat a small encrypted drive.

“That box proves you rigged the range.”

Pike stepped closer.

His authority remained in his voice, but panic had entered his hand. The handgun shook slightly beneath the fluorescent lights.

“You’re a logistics clerk. No one believes you.”

Sarah pushed herself onto one elbow.

A thin streak of blood marked her cheek where she had struck the concrete during the commander’s sudden entrance.

“Forty-seven confirmed shots say different.”

Miller stared at her.

Pike’s eyes flicked toward the hidden drive.

That was enough.

Miller kicked the ammunition box away from him. It skidded across the floor, spilling more casings with a metallic roar.

Sarah reached beneath the lid and pulled the drive free.

She held it where every recruit could see.

“Now everyone does.”

Pike lowered the handgun half an inch.

No one on the range mistook that movement for surrender.

But they all understood one thing.

The commander had not drawn a weapon to protect them from Sarah.

He had drawn it to protect himself from what she had found.
