Chapter 5 - The Press Conference

The Prescotts made their next mistake forty-eight hours later. They tried to get in front of the story. One of their attorneys arranged a statement to local media, describing Emily as emotionally fragile and claiming the family was the victim of “fabricated abuse allegations tied to financial motives.” They assumed public polish could still outrun evidence. They forgot I had spent most of my career protecting people from polished men with private violence.

I did not hold a dramatic press conference on the courthouse steps. I did something cleaner. Through counsel, Emily released photographs of her injuries, timestamped hospital intake records, and a short statement confirming an active criminal investigation. Then the detective’s office, which until then had remained silent, confirmed that security footage had been recovered and preserved. A reporter from Charlotte pulled the string further and found the state-contract angle by that evening. The story split in two directions at once: powerful in-laws accused of abusing a daughter-in-law, and the same family now facing questions about corruption and witness intimidation.

Margaret’s social circle disappeared almost instantly. Men who had once boasted about golf weekends with Brandon suddenly could not be reached for comment. Ethan was placed on leave from the family company. Brandon’s name came up in connection with two prior sealed complaints from women who had quietly accepted settlements. Once one wall falls, others reveal the cracks they were hiding.

Emily watched one of the broadcasts with the volume turned low. “They really thought nobody would believe me,” she said. “They counted on it,” I answered. Then I took her hand. “But they also counted on you staying alone.” That part, finally, had gone wrong for them.
