Chapter 6 - The Decision On The Deck

Dinner ended without dessert. Claire stood first and asked Luca to walk with her down to the dock. They were gone nearly forty minutes. Hélène remained at the table, rigid with humiliation. Philippe made one attempt at justification, then fell silent when he realized I had no interest in easing his discomfort. For once in my life, I did not rush to fill a painful quiet. I let it exist. Some truths need space to land.

When Claire and Luca returned, they stood side by side, close enough to touch but not touching. Claire’s eyes were red, though her voice was steady.

“We are still getting married,” she said. “But not until a few things change.”

Luca nodded. “First, there will be no wedding planning with people who insult Claire or her family. Second, we are not moving anywhere because it is expected of us. We will decide where to live based on our work and our life together. Third, if you want a relationship with us, you will apologize to Claire and to Margaret without qualifications.”

Philippe rose from his chair. “You would postpone your wedding over one misunderstanding?”

Claire answered before Luca could. “No. I would postpone it over a pattern of disrespect that became visible tonight.”

Hélène looked at me then, and something in her had finally shifted. Not warmth, not quite remorse, but the dawning recognition that the quiet American woman across the table had ruined the script she intended to follow. “I misjudged you,” she said.

“That,” I replied, “was never the real problem. You misjudged my daughter.”

They left the next morning instead of staying through Monday. The departure was cordial enough to preserve appearances, but no one pretended the weekend had simply gone poorly. Something had broken, and because it had broken in the open, it could no longer be managed through politeness.

Claire hugged me before I loaded my car. “Why didn’t you ever tell me?” she asked. “About France. About all of it.”

I touched her cheek. “I think I forgot that those years still belonged to me.”

She smiled sadly. “I’d like to hear about them.”

“So would I,” Luca said, standing beside her. “All of them.”
