Chapter 4 - The Call Already Started

Margaret recovered fast because people like her are only shocked until they remember entitlement. She pointed at me, voice sharp and ugly. “Give me the card and the PIN.” Ethan’s jaw tightened, but he still would not speak. He did not have to. His body was doing the talking. He was blocking the exit, protecting his mother’s demand, and waiting for me to understand that love had become a locked room.

I slipped one hand into my purse. Margaret saw the movement and smiled because she thought fear had finally made me obedient. “That’s better,” she said. “We can still fix this if you stop acting unstable.” I did not pull out my wallet. I pulled out my phone. The emergency call had already started from the side-button shortcut while they were watching my face instead of my hands.

Ethan saw the screen glow first. His eyes widened. “Ava.”

Margaret froze. “What are you doing?”

I held the phone up where they could see it, screen blurred, call active, my voice steady enough to frighten both of them. “You just tried to rob a pregnant woman.”

Margaret’s mouth opened. Nothing came out. Ethan finally moved from the door, but not toward me. Toward the phone. I lifted my chin. “Take one more step, and I will tell the dispatcher you are coming at me while I am pregnant.”

He stopped.

For the first time since the deadbolt clicked, I saw fear in his face. Not fear for me. Fear of consequences. Fear of police lights outside his mother’s perfect home. Fear of wedding vendors, relatives, investors, and anyone else learning that the Parker family’s elegant living room had become an extortion scene.

Margaret whispered, “Ava, don’t ruin your life.”

I looked at Ethan. “You did that for me when you locked the door.”
