Chapter 7 - The Man They Told Her Not to Mention

Sara did not touch the photograph. She only stared at it until the room disappeared around the edges. Her father had always been careful with stories. He spoke about weather, bad food, bad boots, good medics, and the importance of cleaning a rifle before pretending to be tired. He never spoke about Kuwait. He never spoke about the man in the photograph. He never explained why, two weeks before he died, he told Sara that if anyone in uniform ever asked whether he was “just a Ranger,” she should say no and then stop talking.
Now the station chief sat across from her as if the past had been waiting inside a file folder. Reaper leaned forward. “What the hell is this?”
The chief ignored him. “The man coordinating the compound ambush recognized your firing pattern.”
Sara finally looked up. “That’s not possible.”
“It is if he knew who trained you.”
The air left the room in a way no explosion could have managed. Reaper’s face changed again, this time from guilt into something closer to fear. He had not merely left behind a medic. He had abandoned the daughter of a man tied to an operation that intelligence agencies were still afraid to name.

Sara looked at the photo. “My father is dead.”
“Yes,” the chief said. “But whatever he left behind is not.”
Bishop survived surgery. Sara learned that before she answered another question, because priorities mattered. When the doctor said he would live, she sat down in the hallway and closed her eyes for the first time since the compound wall exploded. Her hands finally began to shake. Not from fear. From the delayed arrival of everything she had refused to feel while someone still needed her steady.
Reaper found her there hours later. He stood several feet away.
“I left you.”
Sara opened her eyes.
“Yes.”
“I made the wrong call.”
“Yes.”
He swallowed. “Bishop’s alive because you stayed.”
May you like
Sara looked through the hospital glass toward the recovery bay. “Bishop is alive because Bishop fought. I just refused to make your decision the final one.”
Reaper had no answer for that.
