Chapter 6 - The Return
Richard discovered the frozen credit cards at the airport.
The hotel demanded another form of payment.
A secondary account failed.
By the time the family landed in New York, the company’s bank had placed holds on several transactions connected to Theodore’s money.
Richard called Avery seventeen times.
She did not answer.
Elaine sent messages accusing her of upsetting an elderly man.
Caleb wrote privately.
What is happening?
Avery replied:
Ask Dad whose money paid for Europe.
He did not respond.
The black SUV entered the driveway just after noon.
Before Richard reached the porch, he saw the sheriff’s notice attached beside the front door.
It informed him that the property now belonged to the Theodore Whitaker Protective Trust and that his occupancy rights were under legal review.
Theodore had not evicted them without process.
He had simply removed the illusion that Richard controlled the house.
Richard saw Avery holding the red folder.
His first question was not about his father’s health.
It was about the accounts.
Elaine sat down in the snow when she learned the trust had been frozen.
“You did this during Christmas?” she cried.
Theodore looked at her.
“You took me to court during Thanksgiving.”
Elaine went quiet.
She had forgotten that the incompetency petition carried a November filing date.
Deputy Harris handed Richard the envelope containing a civil summons and preservation order.
Richard was prohibited from destroying business records, accessing Theodore’s files, or transferring disputed assets.
“This is ridiculous,” Richard said. “He doesn’t understand what he signed.”
Theodore rolled his wheelchair forward.
