Chapter 5 - What Happened to Her First Team

Major Andrew Nolan had served in the same theater where Claire’s reconnaissance unit was compromised.
His name did not appear in her mission report.
It appeared in the communications records she recovered.
Years earlier, Claire’s team had been monitoring a weapons broker supplying precision ammunition to foreign militias. Their location was exposed twelve minutes before extraction. Enemy forces arrived using coordinates pulled from a restricted logistics channel.
Claire survived because she was positioned outside the main observation point.
Her team leader, Staff Sergeant Owen Park, and another operator died before support arrived.
The official inquiry found evidence of an internal leak but no identifiable source.
Nolan transferred stateside six months later and advanced quickly through operations roles. At Fort Harlan, he controlled training ammunition movement, range scheduling, and access to foreign weapons analysis.
He also controlled the records Claire had begun questioning.
The specialized cartridges on base matched the same production batch connected to the broker from her final mission.
Nolan had not merely leaked Claire’s team location.
He had continued moving restricted ammunition through legitimate Army supply chains, selling small quantities to private intermediaries who disguised them as losses during training.
Claire’s reassignment to Fort Harlan had not been random.
Counterintelligence believed the supply discrepancies would surface near Nolan eventually. Claire’s logistics identity placed her close enough to document them without alerting him.
Then Graves began publicly dismissing her.
Nolan encouraged it.
He supplied jokes at staff meetings. Suggested Claire lacked discipline. Recommended Graves “teach the clerk some humility” at the range.
The colonel thought the plan was his own.
In truth, he had become another piece of camouflage.
When investigators reviewed the rifle demonstration order, they found Nolan had personally selected the lane and authorized the ammunition.
The fifth impact in the wall carried residue tying it to a test shot fired the previous week.

Nolan had tested the restricted round, then arranged for Claire to shoot over it.
He believed laughter would keep everyone looking at the paper.
