Chapter 1 - The Lake House

Elena Whitaker lifted her crying three-year-old son into her arms and stepped away from the dinner table before anyone in Nathan’s family could pretend this was just another misunderstanding.

Leo clung to her green sweater, his little stuffed fox pressed under one arm. His face was blotchy from crying, his breathing still shaky from the allergy scare that had sent them racing to the emergency room less than two hours earlier. Behind them, the dark lake sat still beneath a cloudy dusk sky. Fairy lights glowed along the deck railing. Half-finished plates, candles, wine glasses, and untouched desserts covered the long outdoor table like a party had been interrupted by the truth.

Nathan stormed toward her, pointing.

“You humiliated my mother in front of everyone.”

Elena held Leo tighter. Her voice shook, but it did not break.

“Your son almost stopped breathing.”

Patricia Whitaker stepped forward, clutching her cup with fake tears shining in her eyes. “She owes this family an apology.”

Brooke crossed her arms beside the table. “She always makes everything about herself.”

Elena looked at the plates. The candles. The relatives pretending not to stare. The husband who cared more about his mother’s embarrassment than his son’s safety.

Something inside her went very still.

“No,” she said. “I’m done protecting people who won’t protect him.”

Nathan blocked her path toward the house.

“Apologize, or pack your bags.”

Elena stepped past him with Leo in her arms.

“I already did.”

Nathan froze.

Through the open doorway, he saw her travel bag waiting by the stairs.

And finally, he understood she was not threatening to leave.

She already had.
