Chapter 5 - The Other Deed

Inside Box 5821 was not jewelry. Not cash. Not the secret fortune I half-feared and half-needed. It held documents wrapped in oilcloth, a small envelope of old keys, a letter addressed to me, and a deed to a property I had never heard of.

The Bluebell House.

A coastal cottage three counties away, purchased by Geneva and Arthur decades earlier under a family trust separate from the house Joel had sold. The name made my eyes sting. Bluebell. Where the bell sings. Grandma had hidden the clue inside a memory her illness had not fully stolen.

The letter shook in my hands.

Callie,

If you are reading this, it means someone tried to take more than they were given. I know my mind may not stay clear. I also know Joel has always confused access with ownership. The house he can find is not the house I saved. The Bluebell House is held for you, with instructions to use it first for my care if I can no longer protect myself. Do not let them call greed a family decision.

Love, Grandma Geneva.

I read it twice before the tears came.

There was more. Copies of elder care instructions. A medical power of attorney naming me as alternate if Joel was found to be acting against her interests. Bank records showing irregular withdrawals after he began managing her accounts. A handwritten note listing jewelry, savings bonds, and “the church box” in Geneva’s careful old handwriting.

The branch manager looked deeply uncomfortable. “Would you like us to make certified copies?”

“Yes,” I said.

My phone buzzed while we waited.

Joel.

Don’t involve lawyers. You have no idea what you’re starting.

I looked at Geneva, who was folding and unfolding the edge of her cardigan, lost again.

May you like

Then I typed back one sentence.

You’re right. I’m finding out.
