Chapter 1 - The Plan You Made Without Me

Margaret Ellis stood beside her black SUV with one hand wrapped around the handle of a red suitcase.
The Atlantic stretched behind her beneath a gray December sky. Wind pulled at her blue cardigan and carried the smell of salt across the nearly empty coastal parking lot.
Her phone vibrated against the suitcase handle.
Laura.
Margaret watched the name flash twice before answering on speaker.
“Mom, where are you?” her daughter demanded. “We’re at your house with the kids.”
Margaret closed her eyes for one second.
She could picture the scene clearly.
Two vehicles in her driveway.
Eight grandchildren bundled in winter coats.
Laura and her brother Michael standing on the porch, annoyed that the front door remained locked.
“I know,” Margaret said. “That was the plan you made without asking me.”
Silence followed.
Then Laura’s voice sharpened.
“You can’t just leave us like this before Christmas.”
Margaret looked toward the ocean.
“I didn’t leave you. I stopped being used.”
She ended the call.
For sixty-seven years, Margaret had been the person who answered every ring, rearranged every plan, and absorbed every inconvenience.
That Christmas, her family finally discovered that her kindness had never been a contract.

She closed the trunk.
Then she rolled the suitcase toward the seaside inn without looking back.
