Chapter 3 - The Paper They Wanted Signed

The folder on the coffee table held a transfer agreement.

Not a discussion.

Not a request.

An agreement.

Denise had arranged the pages neatly, sticky tabs marking where I was expected to sign. My father stood near the wall, pretending to study a framed photo while Lauren paced beside the sofa.

“You don’t even need the money,” Lauren said. “You have military benefits.”

“It was from my mother,” I replied.

Denise’s smile tightened.

“Your mother has been gone a long time, Ava. This family raised you.”

“No,” I said. “Dad raised me. You tolerated me.”

The room changed immediately.

Lauren’s face sharpened.

Denise placed one manicured hand on the folder. “We are trying to handle this maturely.”

“You’re trying to take money my mother left me.”

“For the family,” Dad said quietly.

I looked at him then.

He still would not meet my eyes.

“What family?”

Lauren laughed.

That was when I knew she had come prepared to enjoy this.

“You always do this,” she said. “Act wounded. Act noble. Like you weren’t some stray Dad dragged into our life.”

I stood.

“I’m leaving.”

Denise’s expression dropped all its polish.

“You will not walk out after embarrassing us.”

“I’m not signing anything.”

Lauren stepped in front of me.

“You think that uniform makes you untouchable?”

“No,” I said. “I think my no does.”

That was the line that snapped her.

She shoved the folder into my chest. I pushed it away. The papers scattered across the coffee table and rug. Denise gasped as if paper had been injured.

Lauren moved fast.

Her hand hit my shoulder first. I stumbled back into the edge of the table. Pain flared through my side when I fell, breath leaving me hard enough that the room blurred for one second. She shouted something I could not fully hear over the rush in my ears.

Then Denise said, cold as ice, “Shatter her arm too.”

Dad whispered, “Denise.”

Not stop.

Not enough.

Just her name.

That was when I understood my father’s silence had become permission.

I reached for my phone.

And pressed SOS.
