Chapter 3 - The Man in Uniform

Someone moved fast from the public gallery.

A chair scraped.

Footsteps crossed the courtroom floor.

Then a man’s voice came from beside me, calm and close.

“Ma’am, can you hear me?”

I blinked.

A tall man in a formal Army dress uniform knelt beside me. His face was focused, professional, and immediately serious. His name tag was blurred by my vision, but I caught one word.

Carter.

He pressed two fingers lightly to my neck, then checked my eyes.

Daniel stood from his chair, irritated.

“She’s fine,” he said. “She does this.”

The man in uniform looked up sharply.

“I’m Colonel Aaron Carter, U.S. Army Medical Corps,” he said. “Your Honor, she needs help now.”

Patricia gave a dry laugh.

“You don’t know her.”

Colonel Carter ignored her.

That was the first kind thing anyone in that room had done for me all morning.

He checked my pulse again. His expression changed.

“Call 911.”

No one moved quickly enough.

His voice cut through the courtroom with command authority.

“Call 911!”

Judge Hanley stood.

The bailiff moved.

A clerk rushed toward the side door.

Daniel’s smirk began to fade, not because he cared whether I was safe, but because for the first time, someone in the room had refused to treat his version of me as fact.

Colonel Carter supported me carefully, keeping his voice low.

“Emily, stay with me. You’re not in trouble.”

I did not realize how badly I needed to hear that until tears slipped down my face.
