Chapter 9 - WHAT HAPPENED WHEN WE LANDED

The plane touched down in Raleigh twenty-three minutes early.
No one applauded.
No one even stood up when we parked.
Two airport police officers boarded first, followed by a pair of federal agents.
Megan handed over both badges and the pouch.
Susan tried one last time.
“I want a lawyer.”
One of the agents nodded.
“You’ll have one.”
Then he glanced at the items.
“And probably several hearings.”
As they stood Susan up, another slim plastic sleeve slid from inside her coat pocket.
A hotel keycard.
Two folded baggage claims.
And a handwritten note with a meeting time.
That was when the agents exchanged the kind of look professionals exchange when a simple arrest has just become part of something larger.
“Take the bags too,” one of them said.
They escorted her off the aircraft through the forward door.
No shouting.
No dramatic struggle.
Just the quiet, cold momentum of someone whose lies had finally run out of cabin space.
Once she was gone, people exhaled almost in unison.
A woman three rows back leaned forward and said to Emma:
“Sweetheart, you just did something very important.”
Emma shrugged.
May you like
“She shouldn’t have stolen my seat.”
Honestly, there was no improving on that logic.
