Chapter 5 - The Test Results
The preliminary field test did not identify the substance conclusively.
It did show that the drink contained a compound not present in the sealed bottle used to prepare it.
Ortiz sent the container to the state laboratory.
Officers recovered a torn packet from a trash bin near the service station.
They also found security footage showing Evan handling Margaret’s glass after the bartender placed it on the tray.
Evan claimed he added a powdered sleep supplement with Margaret’s permission.
Margaret denied it.
Claire insisted she knew nothing about the packet.
Then Ortiz asked why she texted her mother within minutes of leaving the table.
Claire looked toward Evan.
“I always check on her.”
“Why did you ask specifically whether she finished the drink?”
“She has trouble sleeping.”
“Why were you expecting to handle everything the next morning?”
Claire stopped answering.
Laboratory analysis arrived the following afternoon.
The drink contained a prescription sedative at several times the normal therapeutic amount.
Margaret’s small taste had not been enough to cause serious harm, but doctors confirmed the full glass could have left her disoriented, weak, and incapable of giving reliable consent.
The packet recovered from the trash held residue of the same medication.
The prescription belonged to Evan.
The doctor who issued it had prescribed a much lower dose for occasional insomnia.
Evan did not merely add his medication to the drink.
