Chapter 4 - The Hallway

Marcus stood in the hallway wearing a dark jacket, older than I remembered but still carrying that calm, borrowed confidence.

Behind him, the hallway light turned his face pale.

He looked past me first.

At Natalie.

Not at me.

That told me everything I needed before he said a word.

“Evan,” he began, “I know this looks bad.”

“No,” I said. “It looks honest.”

He blinked.

Natalie made a small sound behind me.

Marcus lifted both hands slightly, not surrender exactly, more like a man trying to frame himself as reasonable before the facts arrived.

“I shouldn’t have come without speaking to you first.”

“You shouldn’t have come at all.”

He swallowed.

“I care about her.”

There it was.

Simple.

Ugly.

Unoriginal.

My wife closed her eyes.

For one second, I felt something dangerous and hot move through me. Not because I wanted to hit him. Because some part of me wanted a physical problem, something clear enough to solve with one motion.

But betrayal rarely gives you clean targets.

It gives you rooms.

History.

Messages.

A wife behind you crying because the consequences have finally become visible.

A man in your hallway trying to sound noble while standing in the wreckage of your marriage.

I stepped back.

Marcus looked confused.

“Come downstairs,” I said.

Natalie’s head snapped up. “What?”

“I’m not doing this outside my bedroom door like some cheap scene you two staged.”

Marcus glanced at her.

I saw the fear pass between them.

Good.

They had rehearsed the confession.

They had not rehearsed dignity.

Downstairs, the living room felt ordinary in a way that made the moment worse. The throw blanket was folded across the sofa. A mug sat on the side table. Our wedding photo stood on the shelf beside the window, turned slightly toward the room like an accidental witness.

I picked it up, looked at it for one second, then placed it face down.

Natalie started crying then.

Marcus whispered, “That isn’t necessary.”

May you like

I looked at him.

“You lost the right to decide what is necessary in my house.”
