Chapter 9 - WHERE GRANDPA’S VIOLIN WENT

Thomas Hale’s violin had been sold twice after Grant pawned it.

First to a collector in Cincinnati.

Then through an estate dealer to a retired cardiologist named Dr. Samuel Park in Pittsburgh.

When investigators contacted him, Dr. Park was horrified.

He bought it legally.

Had no idea it was stolen.

Legally, recovery required negotiation because good-faith purchase rules and interstate property issues complicated ownership.

Susan prepared for a fight.

Dr. Park made one unnecessary.

He called Rachel directly.

“I want the boy to have it.”

Rachel cried.

“You paid for it.”

“I did.”

“We can reimburse you.”

“No.”

“That doesn’t feel fair.”

Dr. Park paused.

Then said:

“Mrs. Bennett, I’m seventy-one. I own six violins and play four badly. Your son owns the story of this one.”

He returned it.

Susan insisted on covering shipping and appraisal.

Dr. Park accepted that compromise because veterans and cardiologists apparently shared a stubbornness threshold.

When the package arrived, Noah refused to open it for twenty minutes.

Then he did.

He touched the old nick near the lower bout.

His face crumpled.

“This is it.”

Susan stood behind him.

“How do you know?”

Noah looked at her like the question was insulting.

“It feels right.”

Three years earlier, adults taught him not to trust that sentence.

Now everyone believed him.
