Chapter 4 - The Property Under Her Name

Marianne Vale was not a divorce attorney.
That was what made her dangerous.
She was a forensic accountant who worked with lawyers on financial exploitation cases, and she had been Valeria’s father’s oldest friend. When Valeria first called about the strange bank letter, Marianne did not ask whether Valeria was “sure.” She asked for documents.
That small difference had almost made Valeria cry.
Now Marianne’s voice filled the bedroom with a calm that seemed to press Mauricio and Teresa back from the papers.
“I reviewed the records you sent last night,” Marianne said. “Valeria, do you want me to summarize?”
“Yes.”
Mauricio snapped, “You are not authorized to discuss our private finances with a stranger.”
Marianne paused.
“Mr. Calder, I am discussing Valeria’s personal accounts, her identity, and a property file containing what appears to be her forged signature. You are welcome to have your attorney contact me.”
Teresa’s hand slipped from the suitcase.
Valeria opened the banking record she had printed that morning. “Tell me about the West Alton property.”
Marianne’s voice sharpened slightly. “Your money never paid this house. It funded another property under your identity.”
Silence fell so hard even the morning traffic outside seemed to disappear.
Mauricio froze.
Teresa stopped moving entirely.
Valeria looked at the pages again, but this time the words rearranged themselves into something worse than betrayal.
Another property.
Under her identity.
Not a rescue.
Not family emergencies.
A theft built slowly enough to look like marriage.
Marianne continued. “The down payment appears to have been assembled from recurring transfers out of Valeria’s accounts over twenty-two months. The purchase file lists Mauricio Calder and Teresa Calder as beneficial occupants through an affiliated holding arrangement. Valeria’s name appears on several supporting declarations, but the signatures are inconsistent with her verified documents.”
Teresa whispered, “That’s not proof.”
“No,” Marianne said. “It’s enough to open a fraud review.”
Mauricio moved toward the dresser.
Valeria picked up the top page and stepped back.
“Don’t.”
“You’re confused,” he said, but his voice no longer carried power. It carried calculation. “This was for us.”
“For us?” Valeria repeated. “Then why didn’t I know it existed?”
He looked at his mother.
One glance.
Tiny.
Fatal.
Teresa’s face went pale.

That glance told Valeria what the bank statements had not.
This was never supposed to be discovered while she was still useful.
