Chapter 2

Three days earlier, while Lucas was in the shower, I had walked past his laptop and noticed an email notification. A single click changed everything. There was no employment contract for Zurich. No relocation package. Instead, I found a signed lease agreement for a luxury condominium in Palm Springs, California, and a second name. Melanie Harper. His "coworker." The woman who was now, according to the documents, expecting his baby.
The plan was horrifyingly simple. Tell me he was moving overseas. Secretly relocate to Palm Springs. Start a new family. Leave me waiting faithfully for a husband who was never coming back. And fund his new life with our joint savings — seven hundred twenty thousand dollars, most of it my inheritance.
He underestimated me. Badly.

The drive home was silent. I went straight to the study, opened my laptop, logged into the account. The balance appeared on the screen. $720,000.00.
"You want a fresh start, Lucas?" I whispered to the empty room.
I opened a new banking window. Entered my personal account information. Typed the transfer amount.
My finger hovered over the mouse.
Then my phone buzzed. A message from an unknown number. Six words: "He hasn't told you everything."

Attached beneath it was a photograph that made my blood run cold.
It was a screenshot of a hospital admission form, dated eleven days earlier, for a patient named Melanie Harper at Eisenhower Health in Rancho Mirage. The diagnosis field had been circled in red by whoever sent the message. Severe preeclampsia. Below it, a second image — a printed bank wire confirmation showing fifty thousand dollars transferred from an account I didn't recognize, sender listed as L. Reyes, to an account belonging to Melanie Harper, dated the same week Lucas had told me he'd accepted the Zurich position.
