Chapter 5 - THOMAS’S HAND

Richard’s younger brother became the first guest to look guilty on video.
Thomas Hale hated that enough to become cooperative.
He returned to the estate with counsel.
Same charcoal shirt he had worn to dinner.
Same anniversary cufflinks.
Detective Ortiz showed him Ava’s reflected footage.
Thomas stared.
“That’s my hand.”
Victoria turned toward him.
Richard said nothing.
Ortiz asked:
“What were you doing?”
“Moving Richard’s place card.”
“Why?”
“Because Graham moved his chair.”
Graham had asked a server to shift one seat closer to Richard before dinner.
Thomas thought it looked like Graham had assigned himself family status.
Petty.
Believable.
Thomas straightened Richard’s card after the adjustment.
His hand crossed above the wine.
“Did you put anything in it?”
“No.”
“Touch the glass?”
“No.”
Another guest’s cellphone photograph helped.
Taken around the same second.
Flowers in foreground.
Thomas behind them.
Hand near Richard’s place setting.
Nothing visible between his fingers.
Not exoneration.
Support.
Then Thomas asked:
“Why would I drug him before tomorrow?”
Victoria looked over.
“You knew?”
Thomas laughed.
“Apparently I’m the only member of this family Richard tells bad news to.”
Richard glared.
Thomas continued.
“He’s giving a federal proffer.”
Ortiz asked:
“About what?”
Richard’s lawyer started to object.
Richard stopped him.
“Meridian Strategies.”
For twelve years Hale Development had paid a political consulting firm called Meridian Strategies.
Land-use work.
Community relations.
Permit coordination.
About nine million dollars total.
Federal investigators had found that Meridian later transferred money to companies connected to local officials and their relatives.
No charge against Richard yet.
No conclusion that Hale executives knew the downstream payments were bribes.
Richard had been subpoenaed.
His attorneys recommended a voluntary proffer.
He agreed.
Tomorrow.
Thomas asked:
“Who processed Meridian?”
Everyone looked toward the empty chair Graham had occupied.
Graham Mercer.
Victoria’s expression changed.
“Dad.”
Richard said:
“I am not accusing him.”
Thomas answered:
“You’re just meeting federal prosecutors about twelve years of payments his office processed.”
Richard looked at him.
“Some of which I approved.”
That shut Thomas up for a moment.
Then Ortiz asked:
“Who knew the meeting was tomorrow?”
Richard’s lawyers.
Thomas knew the week.
Graham knew the exact time.
Why?
Because Richard had told him.
Two weeks earlier.
“I said I would not protect anyone who misled me.”
“What did Mr. Mercer say?”
Richard remembered.
Neither will I.
At the time, Richard believed they were agreeing.
Now he was not sure what Graham had heard.
Then Thomas supplied another motive nobody liked.
Tomorrow was also the day Richard planned to deliver a historical approval binder to federal counsel.
Red leather.
Known internally as the Meridian book.
Every politically sensitive consulting payment used to be recorded physically.
Date.
Invoice.
Executive initials.
Controller questions.
Handwritten overrides.
The binder predated the company’s current compliance system.
Richard had not seen it in years.
Federal lawyers had asked.
Family Operations said it could not be found.
Thomas stared.
“You told prosecutors it was missing?”
“Yes.”
“Did you look yourself?”
“No.”
“Who did?”
“Graham’s archive team.”
Thomas laughed once.
“Of course.”
Richard stood.
“What exactly are you suggesting?”
“That you built a system where the man most exposed by a record is also the man you ask to locate it.”
Richard stopped.
Annoying.
Accurate.
Then Thomas’s own motive appeared.
If Richard became medically unavailable, Westhaven’s control investment would pause.
Thomas opposed the transaction.
So did two family trusts.
He would benefit from delay.
He had known about Richard’s heart condition generally.
Not the medication routine.
At least he claimed not.
Ortiz asked for his phone voluntarily.
His lawyer allowed a limited forensic copy.
Location records.
Relevant messages.
At 6:58, during the dining-camera blackout, Thomas was in the foyer on a recorded call with his daughter.
Another guest’s video showed him.
He could theoretically have put the capsule in earlier.
But he was not beside Richard’s glass during the fifty-two-second gap.
His reflected hand came afterward.
The current suspicion moved.
Not away completely.
May you like
Toward someone who had been much closer to the butler’s pantry.
Graham Mercer.
