Chapter 11 - THE FIVE COME BACK

The five protected Echo Squad soldiers returned to Fort Merritt twelve days after disappearing.
Not to their old unit.
Not publicly.
They arrived for formal interviews and administrative status correction.
Rachel met them inside an IG conference facility.
Mason did not.
He saw only a command bulletin.
The five service members previously listed as unauthorized absence have been restored to duty status retroactive to the date of protected transfer. No adverse absence finding will remain.
Five names.
Jonah Vale absent.
Mason stared at the list.
Tessa Monroe.
Caleb Hart.
Olivia Perez.
Marcus Boyd.
Dylan Shaw.
Safe.
Then Rachel gave a statement about their reunion.
Mason later read a summarized version.
Tessa hugged her.
Caleb cried.
Olivia punched Rachel lightly in the shoulder for telling them to “get proof first.”
Then they argued.
Because five soldiers had spent twelve days wondering whether Jonah was dead.
Rachel asked:
“Why didn't anybody tell me you were safe?”
Tessa answered:
“We asked.”
IG had restricted direct contact during the first phase because they believed someone was trying to locate the witnesses through unit channels.
Who?
They did not know.
At least one protected soldier received a text after transfer.
Unknown number:
TELL ME WHERE VALE PUT THE COPY.
That transformed the protective status from bureaucratic caution into a legitimate safety concern.
Then Tessa told investigators what Jonah carried out.
A small solid-state drive.
Blue casing.
Not the main server export.
The original audit file containing exercise-control change history.
The files could show who altered dates and scores.
Cross had wanted it.
So did IG.
Jonah believed both command and investigators might seize it before he could copy it externally.
He decided to hide it first.
That was his choice.
Possibly foolish.
Possibly why he disappeared.
Then Grant finally disclosed why he had been inside the service elevator during the canteen confrontation.
CID had returned to Basement Two after discovering a hidden maintenance locker.
Inside:
Six trays.
Old handwritten notes.
Two shredded printouts.
And one maintenance access map marked in Jonah's handwriting.
Grant had been working below when Mason attacked Rachel upstairs.
The trays were being moved into evidence.
The timing was coincidence.
The voice:
“You brought her here?”
wasn't a trap.
Grant had been furious because Mason had been explicitly ordered not to interact with Rachel.
Mason had assumed something larger because guilt makes ordinary things look coordinated.
That bothered him.
Then the opening mystery shifted again.
Why did six trays sit in the maintenance locker instead of five on the kitchen loading shelf?
Ethan had collected five trays Wednesday morning.
Those were not the same five.
CID checked serial numbers.
The trays from the elevator had six different numbers.
Mason stared at the report.
“What?”
There had been twelve trays.
Six Mason ordered Tuesday night.
Six more issued later.
When?
The manual kitchen ledger had another entry.
1:36 a.m.
6 cold trays / B2
Requester:
No name.
Authorization field:
SPECIAL REVIEW
Mason had never seen it.
Ethan had gone home.
Kitchen staff said no one should have been serving meals at 1:36 a.m.
Someone used the canteen after midnight.
Six additional meals were sent down—

after five Echo Squad members had already been transferred away.
Who were the second six trays for?
