Chapter 5 - THE MESSAGE RACHEL SENT

Rachel had not told CID everything.

Not deliberately at first.

Then deliberately.

That distinction mattered.

Two days before Evan's injury, he called her after midnight.

Rachel was stationed at Fort Grayson too, but in a different battalion.

He sounded exhausted.

“Mason's running extra rounds after evaluation.”

“Allowed?”

“Depends who you ask.”

“Then refuse.”

“If I refuse, he marks me unwilling to continue.”

“So make him.”

“Rachel.”

“What?”

“I've got headaches.”

She remembered the pause.

“From training?”

“Probably.”

“How bad?”

“Lights suck.”

That should have been the moment she told him to go to medical.

She didn't.

Why?

Because Evan had withdrawn from an instructor course once before after a shoulder injury.

He spent a year hearing jokes that he quit when things got difficult.

Mason had been one of the people making them.

Rachel hated him for that long before the room fight.

She told Evan:

“You've got two days left.”

“I know.”

“Get checked after.”

Silence.

Then:

“That's terrible advice.”

Rachel laughed.

“So don't take it.”

He laughed too.

Then she said the sentence that stayed.

“Don't give Reed the satisfaction.”

Evan went quiet.

“Yeah.”

The next morning he texted:

Better today.

Rachel accepted that.

Did not ask whether he saw medical.

He had not.

CID recovered his training-clinic portal.

He canceled a same-day appointment at 9:14 a.m.

Reason:

Training conflict.

Rachel stared at the record during her second interview.

Nora Bell did not accuse her.

That somehow made it harder.

“I told him to finish.”

“You didn't order him.”

“I told him not to give Mason the satisfaction.”

“Yes.”

“If I'd told him to go get checked—”

Nora interrupted.

“You don't know what he would've done.”

“No.”

“But?”

“But I made continuing sound brave.”

Nora nodded.

That was accurate.

Rachel then admitted one current violation too.

She had entered the course under a deliberately incomplete disclosure.

Her application asked:

Immediate family member currently or previously assigned to Fort Grayson Combatives Center?

Rachel checked:

No.

Why?

Because Evan had died before her class started.

Technically:

not currently.

But previously?

Yes.

She knew it.

She checked no anyway.

She wanted into Mason's room.

Not just the course.

She wanted access.

She had suspected the official report was wrong from the beginning.

Her command had told her:

“Let the safety investigation run.”

She did not.

She joined the course.

Nora looked at her.

“So the confrontation was partly something you were seeking.”

Rachel hated that.

Then admitted:

“Yes.”

“Did you intend to assault Reed?”

“No.”

“Did you intend to provoke him about Evan?”

“Yes.”

There.

Her brother's death did not grant her investigative authority.

Her suspicion happened to be justified.

Her method was still dishonest.

Her battalion opened a separate administrative review.

Rachel might lose the instructor slot permanently.

She accepted that possibility.

Then Nora asked:

“Why the shoes?”

Rachel looked at her.

“What?”

“You pointed at the shoes before Reed grabbed you.”

“Yes.”

“Did you already know they were Evan's?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Irene emailed me.”

That was new.

Two nights before the fight, Irene had sent Rachel one anonymous message.

Your brother's shoes are still in Training Room 4.

No name.

No explanation.

Rachel traced nothing.

She simply applied pressure.

Irene admitted sending it.

Why not send the whole truth?

“I was scared.”

Of Mason?

“Partly.”

Of what else?

Irene looked toward the sealed key.

“Of the person Evan told me the key was for.”

Rachel stared.

“What person?”

Irene shook her head.

“He said, ‘If my sister comes, give it to her. If she doesn't, wait for the man from Inspector General.’”

No IG investigator had ever contacted Irene.

May you like

Which meant Evan had expected one.

Before he got hurt.
