Chapter 1 - The Wrist He Should Never Have Touched

“Move. Now.”

Master Chief Ethan Drake said it like the entire base existed to obey him.

The Afghan heat over Forward Operating Base Viper shimmered hard enough to blur the edges of the steel equipment crates stacked along the dusty lot. Operators moved between barracks and supply trucks, engines growled somewhere beyond the perimeter wall, and dust clung to sweat like a second uniform. Beside a black transit case near the far end of the lot, Dr. Elena Mercer knelt in plain field khakis, checking serial numbers with the kind of calm that made people underestimate her.

She had already told Ethan once that the zone had been cleared through logistics command. She told him a second time when he mocked her “desk-job credentials.” By the third time, several nearby SEALs had stopped walking to watch what they assumed would be another public lesson from the loudest man on base.

Elena closed the transit case with a soft metallic click and stood.

She barely reached Ethan’s shoulder. He was taller by nearly a foot, broader by a hundred pounds, his shirt dark with sweat, dog tags hanging against a muscular chest, his expression sharpened by the confidence of a man used to being feared in public.

“You don’t seem to understand how things work here,” he said.

“I understand perfectly,” Elena replied. “You are standing in a cleared logistics lane, and you are wasting my time.”

A few younger operators inhaled sharply, waiting for the explosion.

It came exactly as expected.

Ethan stepped into her space, his jaw tightening. “You’ve got a lot of attitude for a civilian.”

“And you’ve got a lot of noise for someone who was told no.”

The men in the background stopped smiling. They could hear the difference now. Elena was not trying to win a shouting match. She was ending one.

That was when Ethan grabbed her wrist.

He did it hard, with the kind of instinctive force men like him used when they thought their size settled arguments. His fingers clamped around her arm, and for one short second the base seemed to pause on the edge of whatever happened next.

“Move,” he said again, low and threatening.

Elena looked down at his hand, then back at his face.

“Try grabbing my wrist again,” she said calmly, “and four hundred SEALs are about to witness what real power looks like.”

May you like

He smirked.

Then she moved.
